Was curious if anyone would vouch for painting dp coon traps white? I heard it gets coons attention and brings them over to the trap. I ran around 3 doz dps/ 24 foot sets last year and got 76 coons from Feb 11-March 24 in the DP's. Which im excited about but am always looking for anything that will increase success. anyone with experience? thanks.
Eye appeal never hurts.
But, rather than paint mine white.......... I just put a white coffee cup over the top. Not only does it stick out like a sore thumb for eye appeal, but it helps keep rains from watering down your bait.
Might try some type of flagging. An old CD on a string or something. Never tried it with coons but it works on cats. Would flag my cat and fisher traps with a ribbon tied as high in the brush as I could get it. The ribbon moves with the slightest breeze. A CD would gently rotate on its string and reflect moon and sunlight.
Good for catching the attention of sight predators. Not sure how it would work for coons but I think it would have more attracting distance than painting a trap white. Once he comes over to check out the flagging he gets the sent from the trap.
Check your regs on flagging. I believe MN doesn't allow it in some form or another. Flagging with footholds I believe as birds of prey get caught sometimes.
Painted mine yellow. That's what I had. It didn't hurt.

Way to go. What did you bait with?
I'm a avid trapper as I'm a avid turkey hunter, I catch lot's of coons each year, 3 to 6 hundred I paint mine black and the top inch or so white, I put the trap right there n the trail and bait with fruit loops and fish based dry cheap cat food, maybe 6 part FL to one part cat food.
How much land do you catch that many coons.

I run about 9k acres worth so not sure how much 76 coons help but it's something!
Last batch i bought I bought the all white one.
I was recently told of putting golf balls on top of the traps for this same visual attention and also helps from watering down your bait. I am using assorted colors. At this point it hasn't made much difference other than it makes easier for me to find/check the traps. I am only trapping about 50 acres so I have a lot of days in between catches.
no need to paint but you can. You want the trap to be right in the trail so they have to bump their noses into it. I've used cat food, marshmellows, predator gland lures, etc. Most important thing is location and setting traps in the trails at those locations so the decision to check the trap out is no decision at all.
