My father-in-law got me into hunting. He had tremendous woods savy. He was a successful hunter, I learned so much from him. One thing he told me early on was something I pay attention to, and it seems to have merit. He told me that whenever you are in the woods sitting on a hunt and a Blue Jay appears and calls, be ready. He told me to be alert, that deer and other game are close by, in the area. I have found this to be true. I have read that Blue Jays are natures "Alert System" and will follow deer, bear, turkeys and other game in the woods. I have correlated Blue Jay appearances with deer, bear, and Turkey sightings. I know this may be coincidence, I want to see if anyone else experienced this. Thanks....
I agree with your observation on the Blue Jay. Usually when I hear one raising a commotion, I get alert and watch closely. I feel they like to aggravate other animals and birds quite abit.

I'm more of a squirrel guy. But I pay attention to all critters.
Totally agree.
Blue jays are just as likely to rat you out to the game you are pursuing.
Yup, best to pay attention to all of mother nature ... I agree, i watch and listen to what all the wildlife is doing if i don't fall asleep most of the time..
I don't know about good luck or not. However I pay attention to crows more than anything. Squirrels and chipmunks next. No guarantees about anything but when an animal is causing a ruckus it generally means something has its attention. If I have animals in view I actually relax more and just watch them. They will tell me if something new is arriving on the scene and will pick it up faster than me.

I recently had a flushing dove alert me to the presence of a full strut gobbler way off to my left but just within gun range. I might not have seen that turkey as he was silent, partially screened by brush, and not fully committed. I'll have to pay attention to blue jays more, there's certainly no shortage of them where I hunt.
Great info, thanks.....
Would totally agree. Anytime a hear a Blue Jay, I catch myself starring intently in that direction. Just like a turkey putting, deer blowing, squirrel barking. If your in the woods long enough, you learn them all.
Blue jays are tattletales just like squirrels.

They can be loud and rambunctious for sure.

Blue jays, crows, and squirrels are all good indicators something is around. I think Squirrels seem to bark more at predators versus game. I've gotten up with turkeys multiple times by going to where crows are making a racket. Out of all of those blue jays seem to correlate to deer and turkeys the most
I don't hunt big game, and I don't like big game hunters, but I know blue Jay's are good luck, as well as doves.
Not sure about blue jays, but I normally find that the increasing sound of drumming to be good luck. :)
