Anyone on here train a lot of dogs for waterfowl hunting?
Just wondering incase I have any questions about my pup.
I have trained my dog (yellow lab) to retrive ducks and geese.
The one thing to teach them is basic commands, come, sit stay, and heel.
Once they are perfect on those commands then the retriving can start.
Also keep it fun, remember the dog is a 4 year old kid and wants to have fun.
Good Luck with the pup and have fun.
I've trained a few, not dozens, but i may be able to help.
Ask any time.
Me...was a Professional Retriever trainer for over 35 years and compained Retrievers on License Field Trial circuit for over 28 years. Can't even guess how many gun dogs I trained for waterfowl. If I told you who I trained dogs for... you wouldn't believe me and call me a lier. Then I got hurt. Have had two back operations..can't do it any more.
What can I help you with?

Just a suggestion, join Georgia Waterfowler message board. We have a dog training section. It would probably be helpful for you becuase they usually put together team training events during the year. You would benefit from meeting with guys from your area and doing hands on stuff as opposed to just asking questions on here. u would probably get great advise on here, but with dog handling nothing beat hands on work with skilled trainers assisting. I think most of the guys run the HRC format vs the AKC. The have a good time though.
The middle Ga guys get together quite often around Macon. PS follow the newbie rule or you wont get far.
I have s trained my own for duck hunting here in Florida {Chessies, and Labs} my advise stick with the labs -
I have trained the last three I hunted. My first made her first ever retrieve at 10 months of age, a true blind retrieve where she had to follow hand commands. My current mutt is some sort of awesome. Best thing I would recommend is getting the dvd Waterdog and joining a retriever club. Ask around on the GON forum and Georgiawaterfowler sites about something local to you
