I have seen some big poults recently, half the size of the hens, and some really small ones in the same area, 4-5" tall. I am really amazed at the size difference and am wondering why? I did the math and figured the small ones were hatched around the 3rd week of July. Could this be a second clutch or just a late breeder. Mamma wasnt a jenny, she was an older bird. Just curious to hear your take. Z
They will re-nest more than once according to what I have read. Gotta guess that early July hatch was a real late hatch, maybe the third attempt.
Most likely had a nest or two destroyed but kept at it.

Thanks Yoder, I feel better about them now. I thought they had a chance and am encouraged. Its just really late up here in NH. Weather has been hot and the bugs are out. Plenty of crickets and grasshoppers to eat. I will keep my eyes open. Z
Could be either. despite what most believe, breeding goes on far, far past the last day of hunting season.
I've seen 3 hens all with different age poults in the last two weeks. One group was a hen with 9 almost as big as her and another hen with 3 about the size of a quail all together . Then a few days later saw a hen with 3 about the size of a pheasant.
