Title: Humbled
Post by: tracker#1 on June 08, 2022, 09:08:35 AM
Picked this up at my local gun club game dinner "raffle" for kids scholarships. The call was especially made by past club member Dick Kirby for Art Segol. Art was a good friend and hunting companion of Dicks and a longtime, 40 + years, hunting instructor at the club. In fact Art was my friend also and taught both my kids hunter training at the clubhouse. We lost Art a few years back. This is a "Indian head penny" call. The penny was missing on the call so I found a "1863" penny, one of the the years my great grandfather fought in the Civil War and replaced it. The paddle is cedar, not sure on box, moghgany or butternut? It's  signed "Especially for my good friend Art Segol, God Bless" Dick Kirby 3/5/04...(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220608/2da0af4367a691d46cd2e359058cead5.jpg)

That's awesome! And love all the history attached to it, you adding your own with the replacement penny. Hope you hunt it.

That is truly a piece of turkey hunting history right there.  You were very fortunate to have the opportunity to get it.  Don't know about others here, but I would wonder what that call would go for in an auction-type format rather than a raffle.  To get it in a raffle was truly a stroke of good fortune for you.   :icon_thumright:

Gobblenut is correct. Art's wife didn't know what to do with his calls. So she took some and put them in a box and donated them to the club. The club's board voted to auction them for their fundraising future. This was a decision made a few years ago and I was always wondering what happened to the calls wanting one from Art's collection for myself. I'm thinking someone setting up the fundraiser made a mistake on this one and didn't realize the value. When I showed the call to the club president, Jack, he got teary-eyed. He said he remembered the day Dick gave Art the call. Jack and Art were hunter ed instructors together for many years and we're very close. I also found a member that hunted with Dick and Art. He said he remembers the call and they killed birds with it... Agree, that the call should have been put in a "live" auction IMO...

Congratulations, great story on a call with a lot of history. Would be wise to right it all down so when you pass it down to kids/ grand kids it is remembered. Thanks for sharing.
