I've had a couple go bad on me, many of us probably have had that experience. I had a Woodhaven Crystal go flat after a year. Woodhaven made that right and sent me an autographed, hand selected replacement.
But I was digging through my box of calls and found a real gem this spring. It was put in the box of calls that didn't make the cut a couple of years ago. This year, it sounded like turkey music. As the glue and wood dries and ages can they actually get better, or did I just overlook this call before?
Not to my experience, but the craftsmanship on the calls you've got may be different.

Absolutely.
BUT.............. It would depend on several factors.
What glue was used and how long does it take to COMPLETELY cure ??
What was the % moisture content of the wood used ??
Did the wood dry further after manufacture ??
Did the wood absorb moisture after manufacture ??
I used to make a few friction calls. Mostly walnut pot slate over glass. Occasionally a call would finish out as a piece of junk and I would not put my signature on it. But I did put all the junkers in a box. More than once.........after a year or 5 in the box.......a call would come out all hen and screaming. I always said that the call did it's time in the slammer and was rehabilitated back into society. :toothy12:
I think it also has a lot to do with how you store your calls. I store all mine in containers and koozie's with silica packages. I'm not so sure if it's the call that changes or sounds better over time, i think it's us who change and hear things different in sounds etc. What we hear today may sound good and tomorrow it may sound terrible. I think as we age we just hear things differently.
I keep my boxes and pots on a big bookcase in my den, a stable environment for the wood. Oftentimes, a call will sound better after sitting there for a year. I don't recall a call taking a turn for the worst after sitting there like that. Storage, I believe, is critical.

Interesting concept. Could be very true. Hearing does change
