Title: Jake question
Post by: RutnNStrutn on May 22, 2022, 07:13:42 PM
I've lived on my property in Tennessee for a little over a year now. There's a good population of turkeys not only on my property, but also in the general area. I've seen hens, poults and gobblers. What I haven't seen yet is any jakes.
Any ideas? I've never seen a good population with no jakes.

Possibly in their own groups.  Their own areas.  You just haven't ran across them yet.

I have a great farm that usually has a great mix on it but this year no jakes. One day while hunting in the woods, I hate fields, I had the whole jake herd come in silently. Weird that they were all together, more than a couple broods, and were completely silent. Usually a group that big is pretty vocal. They have the numbers to repel or spot predators and solo toms cant fight that many off. We shall see how it translate next year. Al

Jakes are like ghosts, they appear one year and for the next few years your lucky to see them.

When I find one, I usually find a bunch.

I seen so many Jake's this year it's not even funny, seriously.

The only good I get from it is possible it will be good next year. The LB's were out numbered so bad in a few spots they wouldn't gobble. Some that did only attracted negative attention from the Jake's.

I have never had so much Jake interference. I called up right at 41 Jake's this year. Seen 19 together on one place I can hunt, I didn't even bother going in there. There was not a balance in my areas on hunting.

A friend on mine had almost the opposite a few miles down the road. I thought it early and still believe the winter flocks in the area I hunt did not disperse as early as usual and had things messed up. Once season started they really didn't move much from where they were.
