Title: Hunting the Black Hills (redo)
Post by: bbcustomboxcalls on April 07, 2022, 05:28:03 PM
I hunted the Black Hills for 13 years and enjoyed every minute of it.  Even when mother nature didn't cooperate.
Here are a couple of pics from 12 years ago.

This what it looked like the first morning.

Things started looking a lot better

The end of a great day!

EEK!  I'm trying to finalize plans for the WY portion of the Black Hills sometime next month.  Snow wouldn't be a plus for me after 17 years of getting acclimated to Florida weather.  What time was this?  WY opens 4/20 in the BH zone.

When I hunt in the hills WY or SD I plan for all seasons, because you never know. But then I love seeing them strutting bird wing marks in the snow.

I always went the last week of April.  The last time I went was in about 2015 and it was beautiful every day.
Just be prepared.

Brings back memories. I was there during the exact same time! They sure did get fired up the afternoon it warmed up a lot and the snow started melting quickly.

A special place for sure. Impossible to plan long-term for the weather. When I went, there was a little snow on the ground the first morning.... 3 days later the temps were in the 80's....3 days after when leaving a damn near blizzard....

My suggestion would be go later in the season if you can.
Still plenty of birds just have to work a little harder to find them.

Weather in the BH is about as unpredictable as anywhere. I was out there last year around May 23rd thinking the chances of blizzards were less....that was incorrect. It snowed, rained, sleeted and never got about 40 degrees in the three days I was there.  I could go those same days this year and it can be 85 and you get sunburn. You literally need to bring all the hunting gear you own to prepare for absolutely any type of weather.
