My son would like to try and shoot a turkey next spring. He will be 8 and is bigger than most kids his age. I have a old Winchester ranger 20 that is ready for a choke, but it is missing its bead. I still use the gun for rabbit hunting, but have never patterned it. The only choke I still have for it is the MOD. I like the Mossberg 500 youth and Remington has some fine looking youth 20's.
I've been taking my son deer hunting everytime I go when it is legal for him to hunt. He's been going since he was 5. To date he has killed 9 with a few good bucks to his credit. I won't take everytime I go turkey hunting because I still like killing/hunting them myself and I don't want to be stuck inside a pop up all turkey season.
I guess what I'm getting at is should we make do with what we have or buy another gun? I am always looking to justify another firearm purchase.

870 20ga youth model, synthetic stocks and a short bbl $287 at wal mart. When he grows out of the youth part put adult stocks and keep going.

Or he could put a knoxx stock on it, and both he and his son could shoot it, and his son will have an adjustable stock as he grows.
Yep...what Barry said. I got just over $400 in that exact set-up and will never have to buy another turkey rig for my daughter....and I can bust some heads with it too.
Good Luck!

My 6 yo killed his first with this exact setup. It is a great setup for any hunter. Definitely worth the money.

I am going to look at the 870's next time I'm near a shop. Don't think we need the Knox yet, but can always add it latter. Suprised no one mentioned the mossbergs.

Do you and your son hunt out of blinds? I still dont let my son hold his rifle until a deer comes out.

There are two recent threads on the Mossy's. Mossy offers combo deer and turkey barrels.
