I waste a lot of time every year thinking about what I'll carry opening morning. This year I'm going with an ode to Simon Everitt, a North Carolina pot hunter if there ever was one (a man after my own heritage and heart). I'll be toting a 1928 Winchester Model 12 commemorating the year Everitt's book Tales Of Wild Turkey Hunting was published, and I'll be calling from an Everitt style Roanoke yelper made by the incomparable Ralph Permar. Sometimes, for me, it's as much about the story and the tradition as it is anything else.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220316/b05079c4727267cc16741483caa23633.jpg)

If you know......you know.
Well played, sir !!!! :icon_thumright:
Awesome, love the old model 12. Trying to borrow one from my cousin who inherited one from my uncle Joe and kill a bird with it as a tribute to the old duck hunter!
Good luck.
Nice
As Yoder said, YOU know...
I tip my favorite camo hat to you, Sir.
I hope, the memories are many for you this spring...

Great picture.
Nice way to pay homage. Good luck with that model 12 and that's one nice yelper!
Wouldn't want to be a "love struck" Turkey in your woods while your toting that Model 12. Good luck.....can't wait to see the pics

Me either and mainly because the one place I'm cheating with regards to history is I'm throwing some 2-3/4" Foxtrot Hot Rods. That's a fistful of #9s!

That morning lineup will hunt for sure. It's all about enjoying and sharing the history of turkey hunting. In my opinion any call you carry from a builder has a history behind the calls and that includes what gun and other items you take hunting with you. Making Memories ...
Yes the tradition is what it's all about. More gratification I believe too. Good luck with the journey.

Hey! I know you now!
Great post
Very nice
You've definitely got style Chester! It's about the journey, not the outcome.
Good stuff man!
Very nice Chester, hope you stir em up. I called Ralph last week and I am going to try a Jordan Yelper out he seems like a real nice guy. I am just hoping the Trumpet bug doesn't hit me like pot call, scratch box, and box call bug did, otherwise I might be broke by the end of the year :turkey2:

There's two callmakers I collect and Ralph's one of them. I've got a real specific vision of what I want my collection to be from him so that means I have to wait out the list and get a call a year, two every year and a half if I'm lucky. This was my latest one.

Very cool. I gotta get my long dead grand dad's Fox double from my cousin that took it's fair share of gobblers many moons ago in eastern NC.
I keep saying I'm gonna do it. Thanks for the inspiration
I think it is appropriate to honor the opening day of turkey season as a special, significant event. To me turkey hunting is about the purest form of hunting there is nowadays.

That'd be a fun hunt. Other year my buddy took an old J. Stevens double barrel that had belonged to the Plott family—the legendary western North Carolina family responsible for the Plott hound, our state dog—and he decided he was going to use paper shells. Found him some and killed a good gobbler with it. Those types of hunts are just fun. Post a picture when you kill one with it.

Very nice Chester, looking forward to playing with the Jordan and hoping maybe next year I can confidently carry one in the woods.

Got to the range today to check some new loads. Anyone who's ever asked advice for a stock Model 12 has heard me testify to what TSS does for those guns. Found some 2-3/4" Foxtrot Hot Rods to shoot through this 20ga. All Brice had was #8.5s. I figured it for a max 35yd gun so that's what I shot at off handed. I think I underestimated what this little 25" fixed full is capable of with that load. That's absolute poison.

I have a Model 12 20ga with modified choke and another 16ga full. Might have to come up with some 2 3/4 loads to try out on the 20 as well then maybe I can get my hands on some components for the 16 next year.
Can't wait to see some pics from you this season.

I think there's about a zero percent chance of that not occurring! :cowboy:
