I believe my native state of New York still restricts shot size to #8 or larger.
What other states or provinces require #8, or larger, as a minimum for turkeys? Also, any areas have sub-gauge restrictions?
Thank you in advance!
Good question. You are good with a .410 and 9s in Florida. Used a 8 1/2 12 ga TSS load last Friday. With TSS all bets are off but some states are stubborn.
NJ as well. I forget if it's NY or NJ since I actively hunt both states but don't use that size shot anyhow.
Couple years ago one of the fellas from the state shot 9s into ballastic gel as a test. He was impressed. Was supppsed to have meeting over it. Than Covid hit. Put the kabosh on everything. I'll see him tonight. Gonna see if he can renergize this
NY is 8 or bigger

Iowa has a bill introduced to legislature to allow #9 shot, fingers crossed it will be data driven and make it through...until then restricted to 8's
You are good to go with #9 in both states I hunt, which is Kentucky and Tennessee.

I had not heard this. Fingers crossed. Hopefully they are considering the addition of sub gauges also. They need to get with the times.
Where are these states coming up with number 8s? Not a common size at all, only available from custom ammo companies or hand loads.
I drew Iowa this year and had to get some shot to load, luckily I was able to trade for a small amount so I had a handful of rounds.

Iowa has been 4-8 shot for as long as I can remember and well before HVL/TSS shot. I'm assuming the regs are based mainly on lead. As I said in my prior post....it's time to get with the times.
Delaware is 4, 5, or 6. 7 are legal only when mixed with 4, 5 or 6. :z-dizzy:
Not a state, but Ontario is #7 or larger, and no gauge smaller than 20.
Virginia: When using a shotgun it is unlawful to use or have in possession any shot larger than number 2 fine shot during spring turkey season.
Connecticut is no smaller than #7-1/2.

No number 8 turkey loads existed until TSS. There were some Federal 7.5 back in the day!

How about Texas?
If I remember, nothing bigger than 2 shot. No restriction on the smaller shot. I live in TX and shoot TSS 9's. EDIT: In a quick look some counties with Easterns are "shotgun only" with no mention of shot size.
Most of Rio country is rifle or shotgun.
Waiting on a PA reply. If nothing else this spring should be able to do a mid May hunt there at a wife's cousins home in the Poconos. Be on all State Game Lands. Their home is surrounded by it. May take the .410 with Apex 9 1/2 or the 12 with Apex 8 1/2 if legal. Still have some WW HV #6 lead in the safe if necessary but the more recent birds seem to prefer being shot at with TSS. LOL. :turkey2: :OGturkeyhead:
Was told last night, NJ was hot to trot on 9s and .410s but Covid disallowed the meeting and now it's not even a consideration again

Yep-sub gauges are part of the bill...would be great to bring Iowa into the modern age
While I'd prefer to use a TSS load it won't be a deal breaker. Used WW HV for years and can use it again if necessary.
Illinois is still 4-7.5 in nothing smaller then a 20ga.
Yes New York still restricts to number 8 shot, I hope they change it eventually but only with tungsten shot.

Pennsylvania is good for #9 shot and .410 bore shotguns. That's what I am using this year.
Thanks. I wasn't sure.

"Hunting Devices: Shotgun (20 gauge to 10 gauge only, no 410 or 28 gauge allowed). Overall minimum length is 26 inches and the minimum barrel length is 18 inches. #4 shot is the largest size shot that may be legally used."
Illinois changed shot size restriction several years ago!
I wish Illinois would allow 28 gauge, and 410. Would love to have a over/under Turkey dedicated 28.

N.J. IS considering. Sub gauges AND shot size 10 and up in tss.
Hopefully it'll pass. If it does, it normally takes two years to be officially written into code.
Fingers crossed.
