Title: Turkey hunting knives
Post by: Zobo on February 19, 2022, 08:32:11 PM
Interested in what kind of knife you guys carry while turkey hunting. I got a Hogue Deka folder at the beginning of last season. I like it because its lightweight, sturdy and the camo scales are very grippy. On the negative side if I drop it I'll probably never find it but I still like it. Same one has I do for deer, Havalon Piranta. Say what you want but those things are razor sharp. I do carry a back up Case Trapper knife also. I believe in the motto 2 is 1 and 1 is none lol.

Switch the Buck model 110 from deer pack to turkey vest. Best all around knife ever made in my opinion.

Buddy made me that one. Horizontal sheath so it rides right when you're sitting.

I usually have a Kabar folder in my pocket but it's usually the backup.  A Havalon works well and this year I'll have my Morakniv in the truck.

Carry a camillus #3 ive had for years in my vest. Similar to a buck 110 but smaller and thinner. Its razor sharp but honestly the mora knife i keep in the truck sees most of the duty.

Also like the traditional Case trapper with gobbler etched into the bone handle(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220220/a1a290b32f624cfb8f1880fcc548641f.jpg)

I carry one of those big Bowie knife's like Jim Bowie and a machete for backup...  :TooFunny:     Just a small 3 blade pocket knife ... I don't get all excited about carrying knives during turkey season. I always keep buck 110 in the truck console , box of zip loc bags, box of garbage bags and extra snacks and water... toilet paper etc... LOL...

You know, come to think of it, a machete might not be a bad idea for some of the terrain I find myself in occasionally, lol!

Oddly enough, Greg, I think turkey season is when I get most excited about carrying different knives and I think maybe it's because it requires so little knifework that you can carry about anything. With big game it's always a lot more utilitarian. Usually an Outdoor Edge Swingblade and a boning knife, nothing real special or pretty about either. They just flat work and make life easy. Turkey season, though, that's a chance to break out the goods!

Ain't that the truth! I have a small two blade old timer pocket knife i keep in my vest.  I had a small pair of Gerber multi pliers i carried hunting and fishing for like 30 years, and i lost it in a parking area loading up the kayaks after a river run. I had it slipped on a seat strap on the kayak, and my wife was helping me and took the seat off to put in the truck and didn't see it and it slipped off in a busy launch area. I didn't realize it happened till we got back to hotel we were staying at, so i drove back to look for it, but it was gone. She felt terrible about it, as it had a lot of sentimental value to me, but it was an accident and stuff happens. She bought me a new leatherman to replace it, so i carry it now to make new memories!

Interesting thread. I know I strive to go in light, so I carry the folding Remington R-7 Hunting Knife. Got it years ago, my buddy found 2 at a flea market, he kindly gave me one. Has a perfect gutting/cutting blade, a REM-choke tube wrench blade, and a rounded pin blade that works good removing trigger pins, etc. The other knife is my fillet knife for cleaning up the bird for the grill. It's a Bubba NWTF. Works great, I leave this one home. Be safe, good luck this spring.....

I just watched a youtube channel last night called "project farm" he does testing and comparisons of various items. He tested a bunch of folding pocket knives that cost from $13 to $250. Results were pretty interesting.

My kill kit is generally the same for all hunts. Zip ties, pen, paper towels, and the knife is my Benchmade Steep Country. I couldn't be happier with that knife

This is my backup knife, the Esee Izula. I strapped it to the left side vest suspender so it's at the ready for cutting that twig that inevitably pokes you in the back or ubstrucks your shooting lane after setup. When I use camo netting I cut peep holes in it with this knife. I don't use it for fabrication but you easily could, the carbon steel edge gets razor sharp. It's a replacement for the one I lost last year and weights next to nothing. The only knife I carry during turkey season is the one I carry everyday...a Gerber Mini-Paraframe. I don't clean my bird until I get home and then I use an old Rapala fillet knife with a 4" blade.

For deer hunting I carry a Buck fixed blade with a bright orange handle...that bright orange handle is lot easier to see laying on the ground. I used to carry a Buck 110, but retired it a couple of yeas ago. It's close to 40 years old and was afraid I would loose it. I've had to make several trips back into the woods to get it after forgetting to pick it up. I have always been lucky to find it right where I left it. I also find the fixed blade knife easier to clean than the 110 after field dressing a deer.

For small game I use an Old Timer Sharpfinger that one of my best friends gave me about 35 years ago for my birthday.

does this knife get slippery on you? I have looked at them several times to add to my bowhunting/western hunting pack but always thought it would be hard to hold onto while it was bloody.

HillclimberWV:  That Esse as a backup for big game hunts, I'd say yes. You'll never feel it, it adds zero weight. But I wouldn't use it as a primary field dresser. Some people do. I've seen guys regrind the blade to create a more favorable shape for break down. You don't need size it's all in the steel they say and I like Esses's carbon steel. But the handle you might not like. It doesnt slip for my purposes but you might find it "hotspoty" during a field dress/breakdown/ skinning etc. Another important benefit is the price, Benchmade came up with a similar type but it cost WAY more!

I've always carried a Buck 110. Same knife I used on my first deer many years ago. You could say I've grown attached to it.

I carried this Leatherman for years, with no other knife, until the shears loosened and stopped cutting well. I now just bring a small pair of garden hand pruners with me and a separate knife. I need pruners where I hunt and the way I hunt.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220220/badd9f12d17db96ed39db2c84990e94b.jpg)

Not trying to derail this but since you brought up sheers... If you're looking for some quality pruners check out the Falco 31's.
Need a good saw? The Bahco Laplander is top notch.

You're definitely not derailing at all, I think shears are as important as a knife for turkey hunting. Its all in the same category.  I don't carry a saw but do always take these small Stihl nippers, they work great(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220221/c81e5281512e817860a706fe1e8e9e7b.jpg)

To say I've been less than impressed by the knife offerings by the NWTF through the years is an understatment. I know they're  trying to fundraise but wow there has been a lot of junky imports sporting the NWTF branding. There have been exceptions however. Here's one: American made Kershaw linerlock auto assist flipper. It's just fun to play with while you're waiting for the season to start!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220223/f907a838c07367a3ed852928a6dd0bb2.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220223/487bf21eeef77f88684a1f1b9eb23a70.jpg)

My go-to for a long, long time.

But I got a Spyderco Delica last year.  DANG, SON !!!!!!!!!!!!!   I have never in my life seen a knife as sharp from the factory.  It is NUTS !!!!  Almost breast out a gobbler by showing the knife to it.
