Title: North Central WV Turkey Sightings
Post by: Dhamilton1 on February 17, 2022, 07:25:44 PM
Zero turkey sightings so far this year. I would think I'd see some in the large open fields along I-79 in Harrison, Marion and Mon counties but so far no luck. No luck on some of the major back roads in those counties either.

Anyone in the area, having any luck getting eyes on any winter flocks?

Hoping to start scouting some public land within the next couple weeks.

Good luck to everyone this spring.

I had about 20 hens walk through my yard here in Jackson county about a month ago.
I sure do miss hunting Marion county.

Ride around on rainy days to check the fields...sometimes I'll go a while without seeing turkeys during the winter because they're flocked up in the woods somewhere. Hopefully y'all had a good hatch

Saw a flock in mon county that had 25 birds or better the last day of December. I have seen a hand full of birds at a jobsite in mon county several times as well. Been super busy with work and haven't made it out this winter.

The areas I used to hunt in Marion and Mon counties, for years, have lost 95% of their turkey populations in the last 5 years.

I heard at least 3 birds gobbling when i was out 2 weeks ago. It seems like there are good bird numbers around the private i hunt but the public here in the are has really taken a hit in the last 2 years. During covid it was nothing to see a half a dozen cars at a wma gate on a weekday late in the season. Typically after the first or second weekend you would have had the place to yourself.

son-in-law saw a big gobbler strutting in a strip road in Boone County yesterday. I hunt northern Mercer County and no sightings so far and the population has been going down hill for years. DNR trapped about 100 birds in January of 2012 in that area and they just haven't bounced back.
