Title: Ebony trumpets
Post by: Meleagris gallopavo on February 14, 2022, 06:50:22 AM
Haven't noticed a lot of trumpets made from ebony.  I've run across a few made from black and white or Macassar ebony.  Didn't know if there was a reason for that or maybe I'm going off of limited data.

I think Macassar & Black & White Ebony are the more musical/resonant choices among the ebonies. If I wanted a black trumpet, to me, ABW is a much better choice. Plenty of other ebonies have made good trumpets.

Thanks!  I have some ebony blanks on-hand and was wondering.  I have a large blank of Malaysian Blackwood that I'd like to use.  If I had to make a choice for an ebony trumpet it would be Macassar ebony with good figure.  I agree with your statement about ABW.

Yeah, I am being nit-picky here.....that Malaysian Blackwood/Ebony would make a fine trumpet as it is a excellent tonewood. I have some striped Ebony, Madagascar Ebony, etc. that is all nice stuff, it all will work just fine.

Ebony is some of the nastiest wood you will ever turn I would rather turn 10 of any other wood than 1 ebony.

If you stablize Black Palm it's as easy as anything else, and makes a great call.

Yeah, I did stabilize it, just didn't like messing with it.

No problem turning it cuts and turns nicely. Made several over the years.  I came across a 2.5" x 4" x 36" piece last summer at a gunsmith auction
