Title: The very BEST sounding box calls I ever owned........
Post by: Yoder409 on February 13, 2022, 09:06:31 AM
Packmule got a good thing going with his "Two woods" post.

How about let's do a box call PICTURE THREAD ??

Let's see a pic of the VERY BEST sounding box calls you ever owned.  Not limited to one single box.  But, let's do one box per post.  A pic or pics of that one box and a full description.......maker.......wood combo......any side notes or sentimentalities.

See where it goes...........

Oh, this'll be fun....
We should get similar threads going in the pot calls, scratch box, trumpet/wingbone, etc. sections. I'm busy now but can do it later if no one beats me to it.

Taking my ear and the gobblers ear into account, I'd go with my all walnut from TJ Johnson.
I've killed birds in the three states I hunt with it (VT, NH, and NY), and have had multiple gobbler days with it as well.

My first submission is a Steve Mann cedar/mahogany paddle call. I bought this call used
in the classifieds on OG. I have 3 Mann paddles and they are all good but this call is exceptional.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220213/4b62540a9952ede882d0bfb9dea45fb2.jpg)

#2 is an Ed Terefencko bloodwood/Limba. This is probably the best hunting call I've ever purchased. I usually buy 1 paddle a year from Ed, he's a fine call maker.....(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220213/0a2b7cd76bbe80a811a7067f4a153aeb.jpg)

TJs calls are all turkey. He is able to find some of the best looking walnut too. Look at that lid!

I am admittedly not a box call guy, but I did have a Hudson Hen Box years ago that I thought sounded really good.

I've got a Hudson Hen Box with a Dymondwood Lid and Limba Box that is killer and stays in my vest.

Snakewood over teak.  I've had hens pick up and fly to me.  Toms raced after them running in a half strut.

Tom Laska afromosia over sycamore is another awesome sounding call. He called it a field grade but it's a beauty and of high craftsmanship.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220215/f3949664d1318378a533b90ead866ff1.jpg)

Jody Harrison's snakewood over spalted tamarind is unbelievable. This one has a more subdued rasp and is extremely consistent playing, a five year old could run it. Three longbeards in two seasons with this  thing. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220215/3a1303ebe28c96ca44fa237f281978b6.jpg)

Believe the hype, Lamar Williams red cedar over yellow poplar, worth the wait, money, lies to the wife, aggravation, etc. etc. etc.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220215/94f57f1d6a9ddc99cd9d644ce3d635ef.jpg)

Last one, and an unlikely candidate, Darrel Helm, walnut over sycamore sawn and glued masterpiece. It's accounted for 14 dead gobblers since 2005. Bury me with it.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220215/92cdc845461c9a059f19c341619010b5.jpg)

Hard to choose but the Marlin Watkins Alaskan Cedar over Service Berry would be mine because of the range.

Has to be my Macassar/Butternut fiddlebox. Easy to play and turkeys like it a lot.

That is a good sounding call Stephen, I  believe you allowed me to play it at Turkey Trot a couple years ago. I'm pretty sure the lid was serviceberry and the box was Alaskan cedar.

Yes I did let you play it there. You could be right, I am not home right now to check, I will when I get home.

Here is the picture on the inside I had thought because the words Alaskan Yellow Cedar was on the top that that indicated the lid, but I have a lot to learn. Looking at the color I am thinking you are right.

Here's a really great short box by a lesser known maker.  Made for me by Tommy Slick Gilmer in 2007. It's canarywood over butternut and I swear sounds as good as any box I've run.  The left rail in particular has elicited countless gobbles and has that magical something the birds can't seem to resist. Say what you will about sawn and glued, this little turn if the century Doug Camp poplar box really excels at soft talk and close calling. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220226/19d3621c3d80891c406428cd5d369d93.jpg)

Zobo, I've got that exact call from Lamar as well. I'd hate to see
what they cost now. I bought mine in 1994 for $125, and $15 for
the holster. The sound is unreal, love it.
