Title: Cody Calls
Post by: roosterstraw on February 12, 2022, 05:11:47 PM
I've been thinking about picking up a Cody call. I'm not sure how long his wait list are but for the people who have had them, how much of a difference is there in his expensive slate calls vs the woodsmans and Cody ii slate series?

I'll say this one thing as others have different opinions and we all have a sound we're listening for. If you want a really good call to hunt without breaking the bank, get a Cody II. To me it sounds great and really doesn't sound any different than the world class or spec 1 other than the extra money jingling in your pocket. Not even sure if they are up and running yet in the new building so ordering could take a while. JMO

I have a world class and a woodsman drop dead. Both are good but the world class is something special

My Spec I is probably my best pot call along with my Platz Maple Slate. When I can't get a bird to gobble, this comes out and wala, he sounds off. It really is a special pot....it's been the demise of many weary Toms....

My world class is my go to pot call. Birds seem to love it

I gave a Woodsman Drop Dead I won to a buddy's son and was an awful good sounding call, I have been hunting CODY Calls and retired my World Class Slate after 25 years, that call now sits on a display I made. A friend of mine bought me a SPEC1 Legend Slate and thought how any call could be better than my World Class, well Bill did it with this one! It was custom made for me and it has been death on turkeys. It does have a higher top end and more rasp than the WC had. The call never leaves my pack.

I have quite a history with my calls & CODY! Those would be on the top of my list,

I have a cody II and the drop dead slate. Both great sounding slate calls. Ive had great luck with them in the woods. Ive never played the spec1 or world class calls, but have heard some soundfiles and they sound pretty darn good to my ear. Those calls have a legendary reputation. They are pretty pricey, but i will own one someday.   Hopefully they get back up and running again soon.

You won't be disappointed in ANY call with the Cody brand on it.

They make some pretty impressive box calls, as well.  Bill and Debbie are good folk and I'd feel good about giving my money to them for a call.  I have a few Cody calls.  I generally carry a call I made myself.  So I don't hunt the Codys.  But, a call Bill signed and gave me over 30 years ago is one of the more prized pieces in my call accumulation.

I think Cody is closed for now? Seems like their building burned or something?
When they open up, I recommend getting one.

Yeah I'm not sure if they're open or not. I sent them an email so we'll see.

Recent contact with them, and they are rebuilding at new location and are not making calls at this time, used new or old is all you find for the time being ...

Cody calls are awesome. I have a bunch of their slates (spec 1 legend, drop dead slate, the Cody 2, the fatwood, wood class) and my favorite is the drop dead slate with the carbon tipped striker. Bill sent it to me for free. I tried to pay him but he wouldn't let me. I have killed dozens of birds with that call. It would be the call I chose if I could only pick one pot call to use.

No doubt Cody makes awesome calls. My 1994 Spec 1 slate is among my best. Don't over-look their box calls. I have their Southern Belle box, it is all turkey....Hopefully they get up and running soon.

I talked to Bill when I was looking to make it, it holds my "Original" World Class Slate Call I bought 25+ years ago and have killed a pile of birds with! I retired that call with a SPEC 1 Legend Slate that was gifted to me from a friend.

Thanks!  :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:

Seen that. I just don't get it, why not wait until they open back up and order one directly from them. You could get a brand new one for a 1/4 or the price.

The pot wasn't signed or numbered, but the two strikers that went with it were numbers 012 and 014. I'm assuming either the pot was an early Legend or it was thought to be one. Mine is signed but not numbered. I was hoping that someone would chime in if they knew about the earlier calls.

As far as I know.  None of the World Class calls were numbered.   Spec1 were signed and numbered up to 1000 I believe.   Spec1 Legend were  signed and numbered to 100.  A friend of mine has a world class slate with original paperwork.   Paperwork is signed call number 3.    I stopped bidding on a world class slate prototype from 1980 at a NWT F banquet.  Wife gave me the devil eyes at $1100.

You confirmed what I thought as well was the case on the World Class, Spec I and Legend calls. I also found a picture of a numbered Legend on the Cody Facebook page. I guess a couple of people really wanted that call and had money to spend.

An old fishing buddy of mine has early edition World Class glass and slate, as well as Spec I glass and slate calls that I was always envious of. It took me 25 years to get mine. Your friend's got a good one and you almost beat him. They always seem to donate some awesome calls to the local chapters for auctions. You were smart in stopping before she fired up the burners.  :icon_thumright:
