Here's a discussion starter.....
If you could only have 2 woods available for all of your turkey call needs (box calls, scratch boxes, pot calls, trumpets....) what would they be?
I've been tossing this around for a couple days. I guess I'd settle on poplar and walnut. They are very capable of meeting the need but it would hurt to give up some of the others.
Interesting topic!
First two that popped in my head were Mac Ebony and Walnut
Trumpets: Lignum Vitae and Brazilian Rosewood
Cocuswood would be a third but since I can only do two.
Wow. This is really tough.
Walnut and Snakewood are my picks. I assume this includes strikers.
African blackwood and walnut.

Mac ebony/cedar
Walnut and cedar
For me it would be bloodwood (box lid, scratch box striker, trumpet) and poplar (box, scratch box, pot).
padauk __ butternut
Blue Mahoe and Snakewood
Blue Mahoe and Snakewood
Ebony and Holly
Great topic, I really just started expanding my calls. I prefer pots and trumpets. My favorite wood for strikers is hickory and persimmon. Regarding trumpets, my best sound comes from an Osage trumpet but my pink ivory trumpet takes the beauty contest top prize.
Mac Ebony and Genuine Lignum Vitae
I guess I would have to pick black limba and Osage to cover all the different types of calls
Snakewood & Black Walnut.....
Cedar & Walnut
Cedar and purpleheart
Walnut and Cedar
Bloodwood/butternut
Definitely cedar and walnut for me, that would suck though. It would be a good way to control my buying urges though ????
Looks like walnut has the most votes. I guess I'm not surprised, it's very versatile.....
I was pleasantly surprised by all the votes for cedar.
The first posts that had osage and mahogany as choices made me think hard about my initial choices, those are both fine woods for turkey calls.

I think your two choices are totally solid.
No secret, I'm a box call guy. If it were just box calls in question, I just might pick the same two as you.
IMO, walnut ALONE does EVERYTHING needed for boxes, scratchers, pots and trumpets............except the striker for a scratcher. That's where I feel cedar out does poplar. Just my opinion.

I really thought about cedar as it is a great wood for scratchers & boxes.....2 wood choices are not enough, thankfully I don't have to adhere to my choices here :)

Ain't THAT the truth ???? :icon_thumright:

I read this yesterday and have been thinking about it. It's a fun question. My original thought before I read through anything was Walnut and Poplar just like the OP. I thought it was cool to see cedar mentioned a lot and I am surprised not many or anyone has said purpleheart. You see purpleheart in a lot of calls. I also like Osage a lot so that one is a contender for one of the top two spots.

Impossible for me to pick. I have certain woods for certain type of calls.
