I'm thinking about getting a 28 gauge to turkey hunt with. For the fellas that hunt with a 28, what's your max range that you feel comfortable killing a turkey with a 28 gauge? I'd like to kill them all at 25 but what's the range on this gun, shooting tss 9's?
More than anyone should be shooting at them.
My SA-28 with a Briley XFULL and TSS 9's will certainly kill out to 40. Shot a longbeard last year at 38 paces with this setup. Most guns pattern TSS just fine with factory full choke but I liked both the 20 yard and 40 yard patterns with the Briley and an Indian Creek .525. Both shot excellent patterns and with an ounce and a half of #9's (Foxtrot) I have the confidence to shoot 40 yards+.
50'yards with tss and factory full. Probably further but I wouldn't shoot that far at one
Pattern at 40

It's a Yildiz 28 o/u I got end of last year. Got a 20 and 28. They are good little guns for $

I get 210 in a 10 inch circle with tss 9s at 40 (1 5/8 oz). I never shoot past 40, but the pattern indicates it would do it. Set up right, it's a deadly little round.
20ga performance... mine puts well over 300 in the 10" @ 40.

100% correct. Out to 40 yds, it's just as deadly as a 12. Dead is dead. From patterning mine, the bird would be dead at 50 yds, if I made a mistake in judging distance. Now that I'm preferentially shooting a .410 or 28, I always carry my range finder and immediately range my surroundings when I set up. 30 yds is where I prefer to shoot for the show.
The 28 is a pleasure to carry, to shoot and again inside 40 yds it kills 'em just as dead as a 10 gauge.I'm really liking the 28 load over the .410 as it's typically 1 3/8 oz and up to 1 5/8 in Rogue which I plan on patterning soon. Like the 12, the 28 is also in a way overkill when compared to a .410. My .410 in 7/8 9.5 Apex Ninja TSS is very deadly too.
We all just need to be careful not to shoot too far with TSS loads in particular. The bird deserves better. A lot of "misses" aren't.
