Title: Imperfections in camo dip from factory
Post by: vt35mag on January 15, 2022, 07:57:19 PM
Anyone ever get a new camo shotgun that has imperfections in the dip and looks like they painted over them?
Gun was NIB

I'd send that back for sure if ordered directly. Otherwise I'd be having a discussion with whoever I got it from.

Bought it online through a Sporting Goods company and picked it up at my local FFL dealer.
Probably calling Mossberg Monday to discuss it with them. Don't know that much will come of it.
Have 2 835s, 2 535s, and a 500 that are dipped, and all arrived with no visible blemishes.

Know it's a headache. I got a really high end rifle recently and the stock was cracked when it came. They got it resolved but in the interim it sucked. Hope you get it worked out.

I'm thinking that had to have been done at the sporting goods store, or a return. Can't imagine that was done at Mossberg. I think they'd be more apt to toss one than do that and send it out.

The thing that makes me think it was done at the factory is that the touched up spots have the same sheen as the dip. Like they touched it up and then clear coated the whole part.

In my position I get to see a lot of new firearms coming and going. It's very, very rare to see a factory camo finish that doesn't have some form of imperfections in it. You can contact the manufacturer (looks like a Mossberg), but remember how backlogged most of these companies are. Asking for a replacement may mean you'll be without a gun for 12-18 months.

Thanks for the input.
Mossberg's customer service has been great so far.  Called them at 4:30 last night and got right through.  Sent pics, and they got back to me already.  The stock they deem passable (I'm fine with that), but the receiver is not.

Hopefully Mossberg can get it taken care of for you quickly. Love that camo pattern!

I have toured one of the major hydro dipping companies, and noted that when pieces come off the line from dipping that they are inspected for imperfections and touched up by a group of people that hand paint and attempt to fix any problems.  Quite possibly, the problem with your shotgun.  I don't know if Mossberg does their own hydro dipping, but I also noted pallets of new rifle stocks from some of the big gun manufactures stacked in this companies warehouse. My understanding is that a lot of hydro dipping is contracted out and returned to original manufacture for shipping. Just a thought, but I agree with your decision to return. Looks like your gun should have never made it thru quality control, but imperfections certainly occur in the hydro dipping process.

Got the gun back from Mossberg.
Happy with the results and turn around was not too far off from what they said it would be.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220329/0b00d016239de1945ac83544d3ad1e22.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220329/a5107938cbc522dd5947752a31f37e2b.jpg)

My 940 Pro Turkey came in with minor flaws. The vent rib area is pretty disappointing if you're being knit picky but overall nothing major. I wouldn't have been happy with that receiver chip brand new either.

That's great, glad they could fix it for you. Companies that try to take care of their customers
gain a lot of loyalty for a little effort.
