I don't get the chance to hunt very much each Spring because my business is busiest during turkey season. I have been traveling to other states turkey hunting the past 10 plus years and managed to complete several Grand Slams. This season at home in NY I was able to hunt opening weekend and the third weekend only. Opening day was 27 degrees and 1 1/2 inches of snow when we awoke. I managed to get a nice gobbler at 5:50am with a 9 inch beard and 1 inch spurs. The following morning about 6:30am I called in a gobbler and my cousin killed his second Spring turkey ever. It was so exciting to let this gobbler go past me spitting and drumming then buttonhook 15 yards in front of my cousin and watch him flatten him! This past Monday the 24th it was abiut 45 degrees after 2 days in the 80s.Finally after 2 quiet days, I heard a bird gobbling and cut the distance 500 yards or so to him. I raked the leaves and got set up. I hadn't even got to the second yelp in a series on my Woodhaven Crystal Vision and he cut me off! I put the call down and got my gun on my knee. 5 minutes later here he comes a beautiful 9 1/4" beard and 1 1/4" spurs, true limb hanger hooks and I flatten him. I was in complete shock, I had just done something I never did since I started hunting turkeys in 2003.. I tagged out with 2 turkeys in my home state. I only had the chance to hunt 6 mornings this Spring and 3 mornings turkeys cooperated. For me it is was a season to remember.
