I thought I would update y'all on the Fake Stump project.

I spent several days this season with my back to the board. I had a missed shot on The Opener. A gobbler came up on my 9 O'Clock and I could not shift properly to get the job done. Earlier, I witnessed a gob (the one I'm talking about in the Vision Quest thread) walk right past the board, not paying it any mind. My guess is that turkeys do not take any particular mind to it. It's just a part of the scenery.
It is not without its problems. The old tree trunk that this fake stump replaces was round-- bigger than an oil drum at the base. When I turned, I was turning my back on a round surface. Part of the problem with the gobbler I missed on The Opener was getting jammed up against the board. I'm not going to blame the missed shot on the board. The problem was paying too much attention to the gob in front of me and not watching my back door. The flat board needed me to scoot my but away from it. Sit down next to a wall and try to turn, and you'll see what I mean.
Overall, I'd say the fake stump was a success. I'll keep it up for next season.

For over a decade, I was putting my back against a particular old dead tree. It afforded me an ideal setup for turkeys. One day the old tree fell over. I put the board up a couple feet away so I'd have something to rest my back on.
Just a thought but, if it fell over and is still laying there, why not just lean against it anyway? Doesn't take much to break up an outline.

Well, maybe it's just me but I consider such a setup as ridiculous. But if it floats your boat, have at it.
I say if thats what you want to do then nothing wrong with it . My suggestion would be to round all the corners , maybe make it a touch narrower and paint it a little closer to the shades of the surrounding trees. Im not sure you wanna write Hunner on there.. A smart ole gobbler read that and the jig will be up. :funnyturkey:
Being right handed, over the years I've taken several deer and turkeys by shooting left handed when the animal comes up on my right side making a shot impossible unless I switch shooting shoulders. If you don't already shoot from either shoulder, I'd suggest that you try it so that you are not trying to twist into position to shoot from just one shoulder. Start with a .22 until you are comfortable moving up to a centerfire which will have more recoil.
I get it shaman. Love the "Hunner" & arrow too. It's all about a great spot to hunt & not giving up on it.
One of my favorite set ups was a foxhole and root ball from an uprooted tree overlooking a natural strut zone. Over time the tree rotted and soil washed from the roots. Immediately after turkey season each year, I'd get a wheelbarrow, shovel and some buckets, then start digging the foxhole and building up the soil mound. Even though I no longer have that lease, it's still one of the best places to take a gobbler off that property.

Didn't we compare notes re: Honey Holes back on T&TH forum. I remember your description. I'm sorry you lost access to yours. As I remember we were all arguing over whether honey holes actually existed. This is a topic Run'n Gun guys don't get.
I, too, see the humor in the endeavor. I would suggest, however, that if you plan to devote much time to your artistic pursuits,...and especially if there is a commercial venture involved,...that you don't give up your day job! On the other hand, Picasso and Dali would probably be proud... ;D :angel9:

I've played both roles over the years. RnG and sir and wait. I much prefer the RnG method but can't do that here. The ground is broken up into much smaller chunks and driving 2+hours to get onto the club doesn't seem ask that appealing most days. But, when during the RnG days, there were spurs that were still honey holes. We could often times kill birds within a couple hundred yards of particular locations. Happy had a spot that he killed birds from on several occasions until the club had that section logged. I've not been up there in several years and have no idea what's even left of the areas we used to hunt. Regardless, do whatever works for you in the end.
