Title: One more reason why I love OnX
Post by: ChesterCopperpot on April 22, 2021, 02:55:08 PM
Few things in my lifetime have changed the way I hunt more than mapping software. I love being able to mark things on a map and use topo intel in the field to plan a move on a gobbler. Wished they had a turkey scratch icon to use so I sent a question today and got this reply within the hour. Good stuff.

Gotta love an iterative dev team that responds back! Shouldn't take much to implement since the code is in place, and all it requires is another pic. Good stuff!

If they say that they can't do it, have them call Huntstand and ask how they got a scratching icon.  :)

I use both OnX and Huntstand.. I wish Onx would get the same detailed resolution as Huntstand...cause that's the only reason I have huntstand.

I have called them twice regarding an issue I was having, resolved quickly and extremely courteous as well as informed help.  There is a track icon I started using, and I use the strutter one when I see or hear a tom.

Emailed them once several years ago about property boundary updates and mistakes. They were extremely helpful with deciphering some stuff. Great people.

Best hundred bucks I have spent on any hunting item I own! I guess this one is only leased for a year but anyway...

ONX is an awesome tool, but it works for other people as well,  :(.  Last week in Ky. we sat on a  point and listened to hot birds across a huge valley and stream. I dropped a pin on the bird and a waypoint for us. We ten drove around until we found a access on a ridge we could walk and  went right to the spot. By then the birds had shut up and we couldn't raise them, but we know where to go in the future. This would have been very hard without the app. On the flip side we got crowded out of our old spot by two newbies that showed up. This is an equally hard place to find and in 25 years never saw a hunter. Maybe they used one of the apps as well. Still I like it as a tool

I like the usefulness of their product, but as a company they lost some of my respect when they recently pulled out some of the layers that had been available in the hunt map and repackaged them into their off-road map which they'll try to charge you another $100 for. And surprise, surprise, they didn't lower the cost of the hunt map even though it now provides less information. That's just greed, plain and simple.

I guess that slipped right by me,  alloutdoors. I did notice it looked different. I tried huntstand on trial and did not like navigating it. Both are very outdated and you can not totally trust lanowner's data. The property behind mine sold 3 years ago and they have never changed it. Another farm I hunt changed owners 5 years ago and isn't updated. You still need to check who owns land, but the boundaries are still pretty good, unless a farm has been split in a sale. Just proceed with caution when your on private land. I find it useuful to locate isolated public areas and navigate. I like using the tracking. I find it useful to track my trolling runs on lakes. I have that on my fish finder, but the screen gets pretty cluttered and I can turn it off and use my full screen then refer to my onx screen. I wish they had a more active compass on the main screen

I noticed it because one of the things they pulled was maps of snowmobile trails, and being in NY we have a lot of those. It's not a layer I really need personally, but we've been looking for a new house/property for the last couple years and it was nice to hop on OnX when considering a place and see if there were any trails running through or near the property. People tend to run those trails at all hours of the night and I didn't really want to be hearing snowmobiles zipping by at 3AM.

The main one that I noticed was snowmobile trails, because we have a lot of them around here. I'm pretty sure that off-road/4x4/ATV trails also used to be available on the hunt map, and maybe even hiking trails but I'm not positive on that one. I know that there used to be quite a few options of different layers that you could turn on, and now there's basically nothing except WMU boundaries, public land, and private land.

Just gave mine a quick look and it appears I still have motorized trails, snowmobile and atv. Looked at a wma I'm familiar with and the walking trails are there. I have the elite package not sure if that makes a difference.

OnX dropped the ball with some states having satellite imagery taken during summer months.

The tree canopy obscures all ground detail, so heavy in places the leaves cover up some forestry and gas well roads completely. You have to guess how that trail runs from point A to point B.

Other states with late fall or early spring imagery on OnX allows the user to see the ground in detail, old skidder trails, water seepages, evergreens among the hardwoods, rock outcroppings, and other specific details or points of interest which help you navigate on the ground.

When I called OnX customer service to ask if those states with summer satellite images would be upgraded, the response was apathetic at best. 'Yeah, we know...some day, maybe, but keep sending us money' was essentially the answer.

I prefer the OnX mapping tools over HuntStand, but HuntStand's multiple layers flat out spanks OnX for states with satellite imagery taken in the summer.

I'm for the most part very pleased with my one state OnX subscription. I travel quite a bit enjoying the outdoors, use it kayak fishing rivers and lakes, Dirtbiking, Mountain biking, mushroom hunting, hiking, Arrowhead hunting, super helpful hunting public land, and the save map feature is key in river bottoms where usually one cannot get service. They have always been helpful with questions or glitches. I give it two thumbs up.

Dropped on X due several reasons land not updating property images, boundaries are off, can't connect in a lot of places. Went with Basemap so far no problem with anything and I get the entire USA for $30.

When you go into a no service area with onx you need to make sure you are logged in first before you lose service. I keep my phone and tablet constantly logged in to avoid this problem. After that it's as simple as using the offline function.  I've had a couple glitches with offline maps not loading properly but not many. I think it may have been related to not using the offline function and the phone trying to update with memory from storage.
The summer time areal photos are out of date and not being able to see through the trees in some areas is a downfall.
Property lines that I have seen match up well with borders in onx.

If these guys at onx and the other apps are turkey hunters, how do you know this isn't just some "Deep State" scheme to hack into your secret turkey spots, and your paying them to do it.  :TooFunny:

It is what I have been using as well, they have better zoom than OnX but their maps are not as new. Other than that I like it.

Glad you sent that message to them. Been thinking myself many times this season I wish they had a turkey scratching icon and just thought yesterday I need to message them.

Guess I'll still send them that message and hopefully with multiple requests we'll see it happen.

I heard last year a few got in trouble for doing just that..True or not who knows.

I have the elite package all the states...I'm fairly happy other then as mentioned the detail is garbage..Google maps smokes onX and it's free..So what it don't have property lines and fancy pin drops.

I may check into others myself, just sucks to have so much saved on one platform

I was just joking, sleep deprivation and all.

I'm not signed up for any of those programs and hadn't heard about any of that going on last year.
Goggle maps are pretty handy.

I still think it's cheaper to just get your friends all likkered up and talking to find out about good secret spots

Prime example of the pro's of ONX the other day, hunting a national forest with very little private, of course a few birds were on the line, followed the map and got into position on a little sliver that went in between the private, confirmed by fence lines but they were not posted.

Called in the flock and killed one!

When you "add a waypoint" in your tools tab you can choose between a lot of icons, you can also color code the point, add notes, etc.

Weird! I updated my app and checked it about 5 different times scrolling through looking for a scratching icon. Not one on mine. Sure you're not looking at the Turkey Strutzone marker that has 3 turkey tracks on it? I also see markers for Scat and Scrape but no scratching.

Yeah, when I opened mine and looked I couldn't see it either. I think that probably is what he was looking at. Still hopeful they'll get one on there. Would also like a dusting icon!

Gaia is a better/more powerful mapping option than OnX and much cheaper. Can get USGS quad topos, Google Earth imagery, tons of trail maps....Only downfall is it doesn't have some of the 'possible access' layers that OnX does.

Love OnX. Used its layers function this week to pinpoint WIHA in Kansas. Really helps trying to pinpoint roosting areas in those states with lots of open country.

I've pondered this myself. Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but you are saving waypoints, at certain times of the year. Someone......can see that information.

Funny how I've had a certain area in public to myself all my life. It was so overlooked it wasn't funny. I stayed outta there all year every year till time to get in there. I usually tagged out quickly. (Deer)

I got OnX and used it to mark several places in that area.
The next year there were 2 groups of out of state guys camping there. And two other guys driving in from a hotel room near by.

It's never been the same since.
I understand it's public.
I never had a issue till I used OnX there.

Also, if you're going to take a phone pic make sure you turn off Location before taking it. Very easy to find otherwise.

Onx saved me this morning. I was working a couple of gobblers and i. The heat of the moment when i made a move i left my box call laying by the tree i had sat beside. It was about 35 minutes of cat and mouse before i realized i had left it somewhere. I didnt get the gobbler but was lucky enough to retrace my steps and find my call.

If we don't do this at least once a season with a call or striker, are we even turkey hunting I've probably walked a good twenty or thirty miles through the years backtracking to find my favorite striker. I vowed this year I'd paint a fluorescent line around the handle. Will see if I'm that smart before next season.

Its sure enough easy to do when your in the thick of it. I lost a woodhaven birch striker last year and i searched for a couple hours and came up empty. Since then i track myself everytime i leave the truck.
