Title: 28 Gauge VS. .410
Post by: Tally Turkey on March 29, 2021, 09:28:03 PM
Hi everyone, new to the forum so apologies if this topic has been hit before...

I'm thinking about moving away from the 12 gauge and getting a .410 or 28 gauge and shooting TSS. Definitely want to be able to shoot out to 35 yards. I'm torn on which direction to go. Any suggestions on things I should consider? Thank you!

With tss a 28 gauge should get you to 35 yards pretty easy. A .410 will work too but you may have to play a little bit with choke and shell combinations

Either one will get you to 40yds or more. 28 ga is capable of throwing better patterns at longer distance due to the much higher load capacity of the larger hull. Although with that extra payload you will see more recoil (especially in lighter guns). The 28 is more versatile in that you can choose a light load or heavy load to suit your needs. Many of the guns on the market are not designed specifically for the .410 so they tend to be a little heavier than they need to be. Buy one of each and you won't have to choose one or the other!

I just received a new Mossberg International SA-28 and will be pattern testing this morning. I personally never considered the 410, always wanted a 28. With payloads in 28 TSS ranging from 1oz to 1-1/2 oz, a 35+ yard killing pattern should not be a problem.

The 28 is more versatile, not a weight disadvantage either.

I personally would go with the 28 over a 410.
