Title: Left Handed
Post by: mnturkey on May 22, 2011, 04:26:00 PM
I heard some gobbles in the morning and saw a few Turkeys but nothing close, I ate my lunch and decided to move to another spot close to where I had seen a group of Gobblers.
I was sitting on my chair just enjoying the day, scratched a few yelps on the call and was waiting for a response.
I caught some movement out of the right side, I slowly looked over and saw a red head, he looked at me, then looked at the decoys in front of me and spread his fan for a moment, full fan not a jake.
Problem 1 my shotgun was pointing the other direction.
Problem 2 he came in on the wrong side.
Problem 1 slowly, slowly, slowly I moved my shotgun around over to the other side, lifting it over my feet and laying it on my lap pointing the right way.
Problem 2 I raised the shotgun to my left shoulder very slowly, I could still see him watching me and looking at me then the decoys.  I kept moving the shotgun and finaly got it raised to my left shoulder, now the saftey, I used my finger to take the saftey off and lined up the sights, he was about 35 yds away, I could see his head stretched out as he looked at me, I squeezed the trigger, BOOM, he flopped around I pumpped the 870 and champered another shell just in case.  The second shell was not needed.
Hevay 13 #6 shot had done its work.
My homework while patterning my shotgun had paid off, I always shoot a couple shells left handed just in case.

Congrats on a fine gobbler! I have been forced to shoot a couple left handed myself, it sure feels awkward.

Congrats on the bird. That might be a new way to mount a bird, would be different.

have killed several birds left handed, yes it is awkward, including 3 this year, plus a couple of left handed misses
