Title: Shortening A 870 Barrel
Post by: PEPPERHEAD on February 13, 2021, 06:17:50 PM
I'm thinking about shortening the barrel on a Remington 870. It's currently 28". Thinking about going to 23 or 24. Anybody ever done that? Just curious how it went and how it shoots.

I like short barreled turkey shotguns.
If you have your 870 barrel cut down and then rethreaded to take removable chokes the cost might be more than just picking up a shorter 870 barrel. They are usually pretty easy to find.

I have one of my 870 wingmasters at the gunsmith now getting cut and threaded for tubes. Cutting it down to 21". Should have it back in a couple weeks I hope. I'll let you know how it shoots.

I had an M2 barrel cut down and retreaded by sumtoy. It shoots as good as I could ask it too. The price was good too. Deg a lot cheaper than buying a barrel.

what did you get it cut down to ? I was thinking about having mine cut down but it's already a 24 in barrel and I didn't think 2 inches would make that much of a difference Retay just came out with their 20 gauge turkey model with a 22 in barrel

It's around 22" I'd have to measure

You have to cut it down at a stud of the vent rib so find the closes stud on the rib around where you want it cut down too.

I wanted to get it shortened up to the total length of my 870 youth but it's still about 2" longer than it due to not being able to go shorter without being 18-19" due to the rib. Plus the sumtoy choke is a little long also.

It's all tit for tat but you be surprised how much them few inches hang up on brush compared to my 870. Thing is I usually always hunt with the 870 anyway as it patterns better. I have a 28" barrel for the M2 also so I didn't lose other uses by cutting my barrel.

I bought a factory 21" barrel with rifle sights and remchoke for my 870 20 gauge for $200 delivered from optics planet. I wanted to keep my 26" barrel. I will say I have not been able to get my short barrel to shoot with my 26". However I have recently deep cleaned it but waiting on weather to test it out post cleaning.

Sumtoy is a very busy boy these days. I'm waiting on him to get caught up.

I've had several 870 20ga's cut and quite a few 870 12's cut to turkey length.
They all shot just as good as the ones from the factory. If it's rethreaded in tru choke your choke tube choice is limited vs what's available in remchoke or the winchoke.

Tru Choke is good set up.    Now we have got covered up and tell folks you can use the gun if you have it but cant if I have it in line.    Everyone forgets the turkey gun until turkey season then race to get it in line.   I know every shop that calls to order stuff say they backed up.    It is a blessing but a curse also.

I'll gladly wait to take it down to Sumtoy. I'll be is south Ga hunting with my son later on. We went down last year to pick up a choke. Nicest people you'll ever meet... and they have cool animals too.

I'm not sure if they still do it, but Carlson's cut down an 870 for me a few years ago.

It may be cheaper just to find a new/used shorter barrel online.
