Title: pa state land bird
Post by: clarksvalley on May 22, 2011, 10:58:27 AM
shot this bird on  tuesday may 12,heard him gobbling on sunday the 10.we were having a stretch nice weather so i decided to take 4hrs vaction and go into work late.when i first heard him tuesday he was roosted alittle higher than i expected .i knew the hollow he was in and got setup.got alittle closer than i wanted to but he gobbled again so i did`nt spook him.the only movement i made was pull my slate call out of my vest and put on the ground and lay my gun across my knee.nothing things went quiet then i heard a turkey putting up in a tree straight acrosss from me.bird flew down and got out of there real quick.i`m thinking you got to be kidding me,i hung around for half hour or so and nothing.so decided to try another place and he gobbled up on a flat ridge.until i could get there without getting busted he was gobbling good on his own.he responded good to the call but would not budge strutting back and forth.he went away from me and resetting up he just would`nt come in.with time burning and having to get to work i got more aggressive with the calling and he could`nt take it and came in for a 30 yard shot.18lbs,11.0 beard, spurs 7/8 and 1/2.

Nice bird! 11" beard and only 18 lbs and only 7/8" and 1/2" spurs Do you think it was a 2 year old?

What is the call?

not sure, did`nt act like a two year old.the birds i`m hunting are mountain birds and 16 to 18lbs are what we get,if you kill a 19 or 20 lbs. bird that a big bird.as for the spur length i usually don`t get long spurs due to the rocks.the 1/2 spurs was broke off.

the call was made by albert paul from mississippi.poplar and cherry field grade.i like to use pot style calls but i`ve been going back to that box more and more.

Hey clarksvalley, I like the pot style calls myself, but I find myself going back to box calls too. One time in South Dakota we called for over 3 hours without getting a response. We decided to call it a day and I started to take my daughter who is in a wheelchair out of the blind, I spied a box that I hadn't tried. Three yelps later and I was pushing her back in the blind with a gobbler on the way.
I thought because of the beard length he had to be more mature, but the weight and the spurs threw me. But if you live in a rocky, mountainous area that seems right
