Title: Can a turkey hunt get much better than gobblers and morels?
Post by: fallsflight on May 21, 2011, 09:25:36 PM
I took one of my friends out turkey hunting this morning.  We had around 4 - 5 birds within close distance and worked the first bird into range that my friend shot.  It had probably a 9 - 10 inch beard with one spur over an inch and the other under an inch. (haven't measured anything yet). We quickly grabbed the bird, congrats, etc and then moved on to work the next bird.

After setting up and calling, the bird responded to everything we and the crows gave to him.  He circled around and above us and did not want to come down the hill.  After, dealing with this for awhile, we decided to back out of the woods, circle around the corner and set up in the field on the direct opposite side of the bird.  That is what it took, as he gobbled a few more times before he made his way out of the woods and into the field only to fall in love with my DSD decoy and quickly took a dirt nap after that.  He had approx a 9 inch beard and spurs just under an inch I would say.  (again, haven't measured yet)

Before we left, I said lets go check a section of woods where I found a few morels the day before.  That proved to be a good idea, as we hit a mother load.  With nothing to put them in and my DSD not having a hollow cavity, we weren't sure what to use.  Then my friend pulled out a feather flex decoy from his vest and we proceeded to fill that sucker till no more would fit inside.  58 morels all together.  Probably could have gotten more, but due to time we had to head out.

Here is a picture of my bird.  (taken with cell phone and foggy out, so a little crappy)
