I got 84 in a 10 at 40 with winchester hv #4's this weekend. First shot and I didnt compare to any other lead shot that was 3- 13/4oz-4.

My best led patterns are mid 120s with an older 835 with a pure gold choke shooting 3.5 inch winchester #5s. Hope to better that with with my bps 10 and #4s.

I am most certain that this is pertaining to the 12 gauge only for the 40 yard shot. Using # 6 lead in the 20 gauge a few years ago with H-13 , a 120 in the 10 was pretty awesome, with high 80s - 90s accepted.
There have been umpteen choke designs since then and they have for the most part all been designed around the HTL shot versions and rightly so as the HTL in a 20 makes for an incredibly versatile shotgun with 30 -35 lbs recoil vs. 67lbs on the 3.5 " "canons" especially with 1 1/4-1 1/2 oz. shot loads.

However, for those who are hunting thick woods, using decoys set up 20 yards away and such the 20 gauge lead load does a very ample job of taking birds home from 20-30 yards and even 35 yards is a pretty sure thing for some. If you haven't tried 30 yard patterns for lead in the 20 gauge you may be very surprised at the pattern and number of shot in the 10 -15" ring. A lot of the slightly more open chokes can give impressive coverage and really help the confidence of a young or inexperienced hunter.

And if you handload, 1.25 oz of buffered lead 7.5s will get it done in the 20 to 30-35 yds all day long.

while evaluating HTL loads I also shot a few rounds of lead.  I did get 125 in 10" at 40 yards with Federal 2 1/4oz FC Wad #5's with my Super X2 24" Turkey Gun and Rob Roberts Guworks Final Strut .660 Choke

My Mossberg 835 Winchester Supreme XX 3.5 inch  #6s with Mossberg XX full choke (Extended but plain) will put it in the 140s all day long. My best is 147.  I can't find the picture to prove it, but that is what it will do.  Turkey killing machine!
