Title: 2.75" Hevi 13 in an Auto 5-- thoughts welcome (pattern included)
Post by: Chew on March 18, 2013, 02:00:44 PM
I have an 80's Auto 5 I plan on using with a standard Invector Indian Creek Black Diamond Strike choke.

I shot it this weekend with Hevi-13 #6's.  It was 44 degrees and a little windy.

This is at 30 yards.  The circle is just under 10" (I didn't have a plate that was actually 10").

When I expand the circle to 10", I was at about 180 @30 yards (the paper says 158, but the circle is a little small).

My POI is clearly off.  I'm picking up a rib mounted sight from Dead Ringer, so I should be able to dial that in.  I was actually aiming at the small dot below the pattern.

I can't really find much info on how many hits you'd want from a 2.75" shotshell, since most guys are using 3 or 3.5" these days with a much larger payload.

Just wondering what the general impressions were. Do you think I could stretch this to 35 or 40 yards and still make an ethical shot?

Thanks,
Matt

I believe it would still work at 40, but shoot it to be sure.  Here is one of my best patterns from a 1950's 2.75" 12ga Auto5, Invector Plus, 21" barrel.  I switched from the Kick's to the IC 665 choke, which gave the most consistent numbers, in the 150's with Hevi13 #6, and was decent with lead #6.

Thanks for the info!

I'll give it another shot in a week or two when my sight comes in.  Nice to know there are other folks out there still playing around with these old Auto 5's!

Glad to see you guys posting results regarding the older A-5's. As soon as it warms up a bit i'm going to pattern my early 90's (Japan) A-5 with the Inv+ choke. I'm also using the Hevi 13 6's. I bought the following chokes:Truglo SSX, Trulock, Jelly Head, Star Dot (Highlander), Indian Creek, MAD Super Max and Hevi Shot choke. I figured with a 2 3/4" gun I'm trying EVERYTHING.

Good call.
I got this gun a couple months ago and have only picked up the Indian Creek choke.  I'd like to snag a couple others to try...but that will have to happen after spring season.

^ You'd probably be able to find some chokes on sale after the season. The classifieds on here are a great place also. A lot of guys are like me in that they try a bunch of chokes, stick with the one that performs best in their particular gun and sell the others.

I would definitely give the 2 3/4" #7s a try if they are legal where you hunt.

I don't see Hevi 13 2 3/4" #7's available on the website?

I'd like to try some.  Maybe I'm not looking in the right spot?
