Ok since the 410 crazy is going on I had a question bout modifying one.
I like a short barrel turkey gun. I've had from 30" to 20" barrel guns but the shorter barrels are better for me in the thick mountain country.
Has anyone had the barrel on the Stevens 301 cut down and retreaded to say, a 20 or 21" barrel?
I figured it had to be possible and don't see why it still wouldn't pattern good.
Thoughts? Opinions?
I shoot a 16" on a contender with a custom choke from William.

Wow that's a different setup. I'd like to see a picture of it. Sounds awesome
Late reply on this one. Since the chamber is further back on the receiver the overall length of the gun is shorter. Should not be much different than using a pump or semi-auto with a 22' barrel.
I dont think i would cut it down they are same total length as 20ga 870 compact
ATI makes one with a shorter barrel in a turkey model and it comes with 2 chokes.. It's the Nomad .. I have one of them, it's a nice 410, but the trigger weight is heavier than the Steven 301 T...
I believe the Steven's 301 410 is just about perfect as it comes from the factory. I like shorter barrels but didn't do a thing to mine except mount a red dot sight on it. And smooth out the action & trigger a bit.
Check out a CVA Scout, 22" barrel. (23" w/choke) Super compact.
