Title: Weighing the bird
Post by: FullChoke on February 08, 2019, 09:35:17 PM
Two small, but important points that I want everyone to be mindful of concerns correctly weighing of the gobblers. You can get a much clearer and accurate photograph of the weight of the bird if you use a digital scale. They can be picked up on eBay for just a few dollars and work beautifully. The other issue is to make sure that when you get your reading that you are not also weighing the turkey tote that you used to carry him out of the woods.  Some totes can be rather elaborate leather contraptions with rivets and several welded steel rings that raise the displayed weight of the bird above what he actually was. There are a few ways to get a fairly accurate reading. Most digital scales will allow you to tare the scale, that is, hang the tote on the scale and hit the 'Tare' button which will reset the reading to '0.00'. You can then reattach the tote to the bird and hang the bird and tote to get an accurate reading of just the weight of the bird. You can also use a short length of light weight cord tied in a loop to cinch onto the gobbler's legs and then hang him on the scale.

With whatever equipment you use to weigh your gobbler, just make sure that it is correct, dependable and defendable.

Cheers  ;D

Should anyone be looking for a scale...I just got a Dr Meter scale from amazon for 10.99 with free prime shipping.  Has a nice easy to read display.

Another good suggestion from a team mate is to hang the scale from something steady to prevent your reading from "bouncing" due to hand movement and just wait for it to stabilize before taking your photo.
