Title: African Blackwood Trumpets-Build #2 & 3
Post by: gergg on October 07, 2018, 07:51:23 PM
I built trumpets #2 & 3 today, both African Blackwood, slightly different aesthetics, just figuring out how I want them to look moving forward. I will say that they sound nearly identical, so my internals/processes are repeatable which is why I built two of the same wood today. I know the pics make one look shorter than the other, but they are identical lengths.

I think I prefer the bottom call. Just a touch smaller in the middle and looks like the bell is a touch different. Nice looking calls

Appreciate the feedback, I am still figuring out the lathe, easy to get away from where I think I am heading, then it is "oh crap" time...lol

Thanks Chris, I am making progress, slowly but surely. I was in the shop all day today.

It's amazing how time flies when you're in the shop. Well, it was time well spent.

Hey Chris....in person I like the bottom one better too. These close-up pics are hard to read, the thinnest portion of each is within .015 of each other.

Go to Harbor Freight and get some of those cushion floor pads. They help some with your back. I like your calls. My vote is number two with the straight area below the ferrule.  They look good!

Those are sharp Gregg. I'd love to see one with a nice smooth barrel and only a lanyard notch.

You mean like a Turpin or a Buice ???  Stick with a unique design Gregg.

There is only so much that can be done with the shape of a trumpet before it gets goofy looking. I am trying to be somewhat different and remain in the ballpark of acceptable/normal. It also has to look appealing to my eye or I will keep trying another design(I like this shape). It would be easier to just do a straight barrel with few appointments, and maybe that is where I will end up, but for now I am trying this slightly different path.
