I have a 28" 870 SM and I have several boxes of old remington 3.5" hevi #4, 1 7/8 oz shells that I may try this year. I currently shoot hevi #6 or #7 through a .665 JH and get great patterns, I just wanted to try something different. The hevi #4 should have plenty of energy at 40 yards and I did shoot one out of the .665 JH at 40 yards and got over 120 in a 10" circle. Should I try a tighter or a more open choke with the #4 hevi? I usually carry a 20 ga or my 835 in the spring but usually use this 870 in the fall season.
I doubt you will do much better than 120. There isn't many pellets in that load. Shoot another just to check and if you get 100+, then you should be golden
120 with 4's with that load is very good. If it ain't broke don't fix it. My 870 throws a mean pattern with 4's and the Rem super full choke. Nothing wrong with 4's if that's what your gun likes to eat.
I shoot that shell in 6's out of my Browning gold with an SSX. I get about 170, but it looks like it has shot sizes 7-4 in it.
Dawei shoots the 4's exclusively, but only shoots lead.....give him a pm and maybe he can offer some advice on choking down a load of 4's

Agreed.......120 4's would be a shock to his system..I'd go with it.
I shoot the "Old" Rem. 3.5" HV Hevi-Shot 1 3/4 oz. of #4 out of my 26" barrel Rem 870 SM. It shoots better patterns with #4 than #6. This combo is a real killer. I shoot it thru a Rem. original .675 Hevi-Shot choke tube. I only have 16 shells left so I don't shoot it at paper anymore! I would sure like to find some of these loads somewhere.

I know it's a little off topic but that's a very under-rated choke. The Rem SF Hevi is what I hunt with and I also have a Kicks .655, Rem Ventilator .655, Truglo SSX .643, and JellyHead .665 if that tells you anything.

I agree with your opinion of the Rem. original Hevi-Shot choke tube. It's a keeper! Mine really patterns those "old" Rem. shotshells.

hevi shot can make any choke look good
