Title: What's the fastest...
Post by: Happy on January 28, 2020, 04:57:25 PM
You have had a gobbler approach your calling? Not talking about approaching decoys but purely towards calling?

About 3 minutes.  Pulled into some planted pines and got out of my jeep.  Walked across maybe 4 rows and cut on a mouth call mid morning.  Longbeard gobbled and ran down the row right to me while I'm still standing and in plain view of my jeep.  Shot him at about 15 yards.   I've had several 10-15 minute hunts, but that was by far the fastest I've had one come in.

I don't know if this is considered calling but I have killed several that came running right to me while walking a ridge and calling. I'm talking about just walking between calling spots. Several gobbled at my footsteps in the leaves. I think it is a quick conformation to the gobbler that that hen is real and is getting away.

Each time I just stand there thinking...that just happened!

I moved to a new area I was hunting and cutt on the call.
A big Tom must have been standing with a few hens and a Jake by a tree top. As soon as I called he about did a backflip through the tree top and gobbled after he hit the ground.
A little more calling and within minutes i was waiting for the cloud of smoke to disappear with my first muzzleloader kill.

About 3 to 5 minutes.

45 seconds

Got between a monarch and a pair of 2 year olds on the roost one time.  I was actually set up on the 2 year olds.  Wasn't aware the old boy was below me til he fired a gobble off.  As soon as he hit the ground I did a single cluck-purr on a diaphragm and turned the dot on............  He came in, doing the fast "mean walk".......periscope up.

Game over.

THIS, exactly. Sat down on the young man on purpose, and ignoring the King and only answering the 2yr old brought him within a minute after he hit the ground. When he hit he sounded like a 50lb sack of potatoes fell out the tree, they can determine how hard and loudly they hit the ground if you haven't figured that out.

I had one last season that cut off my yelp with a gobble just around a curve in the road that almost instantly popped around the curve at 30 yards. Total time from first yelp to me shooting him probably less than 30 seconds. He was my best turkey ever as well. Pure luck I didn't booger that situation up

30-45 sec.  was easing along just below the crest of a lengthy ridge calling on occasion when one sounded off just on the opposite side. Barely had time to get set up when his head came bobbing up over the crest. Done deal.

About 1 minute if I recall correctly.  Believe the quickest was the first one I killed in TN.  I always try to stand next to a good tree to setup before I start calling.  In this case, he responded as soon as I called, so I plopped down and saw his head come a bobbing within a few seconds.

Happy, you should start an opposite thread.  What's the slowest (or longest)... cause I got a few of those!

Probably 30-45 seconds.... Long story short I was working my way down a logging road in East KY calling every so often. Stopped at a bend in the raod and hit my pot call and got an immediate double gobble back from just around the bend in the road. I sat down right there in the middle of road and hit the call once more and got my gun up. 2 gobblers came running around the bend in the road and I dropped the bigger one at maybe 15 yards.

About 8 minutes is my fastest first call to kill.  Late one morning in 1995 after hearing nothing early, I was walking up a creek bottom towards a saddle in the ridge.  Once I got to the saddle, I leaned up against a tree and cutt on my old Lynch box.  A gobbler fired up behind me along the ridge ( I must have walked past him or he was on the other side of the crest) and he came trucking to the saddle.  I'd settled against the base of the tree that just happened to have a holly behind it for good cover.  The gobbler strutted behind me across the draw towards the other side of the ridge, but didn't make it. I busted him with a 3" #6 Federal from my single shot at about 25 yards.

30 seconds maybe a little longer. Set up on a bird gobbling on the limb. Gave him a tree call and he pitched about 5 yards in front of me. It was still hazy grey but I could see him through my scope. Fastest hunt I ever had. Never had a bird do that again in 40 years of chasing them. It was crazy because this was the fourth day in a row I hunted him. I stayed with him for the 3 days prior and could not do anything with him. On the first day I had him at 50 yards and he would not budge. I learned that preseverance will pay off. That bird taught me that any bird is killable at some point if you have the dedication to stick with him.

True what Gobspur said, remember a lot better and more fond of the struck at 9 and killed after 11:30 type.

I could throw in a few hunts that gave me some gray hair.

I don't know for sure but pretty fast on a few occasions.  It's always been the result of unknowingly getting way too close to a bird without bumping it (or them), yelping, getting a response close enough to make my heart rate spike, hitting the dirt and the bird running in pretty quick.  I never really timed it.  There is usually quite a bit of luck involved.  Probably been as many that didn't turn out.

My first turkey hunt.  Walked down a power line at dawn.  Heard a gobble and sat down against a little pine tree.  Gave 2 clucks on a cheap walmart special box call and he pitched off the roost and flew right at me. I'll never forget it.  Looked like a F14 landing on an aircraft carrier.  In my youth and ignorance, I shot him when he was still in the air about 6 feet off the ground and rolled him.  My dummy of an ex girlfriend that went with me thought I shot a buzzard. lol.
Entire hunt lasted less than 2 minutes.
Needless to say, I was educated on the hunts after that. lol.

About 45 seconds. Using Knight & Hale fighting purrs the first year they where produced (still have them). I would say it was more like "self defense"..... 3 long beards almost ran me over....

Running and gunning I have had birds show up and it was all less than 30 seconds. Always look for a place to set up prior to calling, had a bird gobble less than 50 yds when I was standing on a log road with no place to set my rear end down..

About a minute or two. Was too frazzled to pay attention to time. There've been a couple of times I was walking down a trail, stopped and let out a call, and was answered by a gobbler right around the next bend. :o I immediately sat down at the nearest likely spot, got my gun up, let out a cluck and purr on the diaphragm, and in short order, here he comes marching in down the trail. Nerve wracking and immensely satisfying at the same time.

I would say a minute or two . I always try to find a spot or tree to get on before I make the first call . Definitely don't want to be caught standing there if you can help it . Have had them run in on several occasions and it doesn't take long for them cover some ground quick . Although I will say most gobblers take their time coming in walking and strutting stopping occasionally to periscope the situation.

Instantly and flopping within seconds. I was standing at the edge of a swamp bottom, waiting for it to get light enough to start calling because nothing gobbled at my owl hooting. When it got light enough, I started yelping. In the middle of my first series of yelps and straight out in front of me about 100 yards or so, I saw a turkey glide down out of a tree. He hit the ground and immediately began running toward me at full speed. I simply raised my gun and when he got to about 20 yards I let him have it.

My quickest hunt was a loudmouth 2 year old that I roosted the night before. His position and the openness of the trees limited me to setting up 100 yards from him. From the time he pitched down, I yelped and cut hard at him and he ate it up. He was shot within two minutes.

Maybe two minutes or so?
I was walking down a logging road an stepped on some dried leaves.  Heard him sound off in a creekbottom just off the road. I plopped down beside just off the road and called once.  Two birds came running in and flew the creek coming at me.  The bossy acting one went home with me.

We had a pair come in within a couple minutes this past spring. It happened so fast I couldn't believe it.  It was thick so we were fairly close when he first gobbled.

The fastest...

58 MPH and 10-12 seconds,

I drove around a bend in the dirt road and there he was strutting in the middle of the road,

I punched the gas peddle and started to get the gun up,
rolled down the window while sliding to a stop in one smooth motion.

clucked one time (natural voice) to get his head up, and it was picture time.

Just last year on my first day of my trip.  Maybe 6-8 minutes since I heard the gobble.

I decided to take a mid morning coffee break so I quietly walked back towards my truck.  When I reached the field road that went past the barnyard, I gave a hen yelp (rule - one more call before calling it quits).  I didn't hear anything and took a couple of steps when I thought I heard a gobble.  I immediately stopped and called again and sure enough, I heard it again but louder.  The terrain is such that there are a number of small fields that follow the hilltops, with wooded ravines in between.  I thought it was coming from the next field over so I cut across a pasture, only to have it gobble again right on top of me,  I also saw movement through a ditch that had some scrub trees.  I dropped onto my belly right where I was, out in the middle of the pasture.  I was wearing a vest that carried 2 inflated Avian decoys.  I figured that between my movement and the fact that I stuck out like a sore thumb, I would have no chance.  All I could do was point my gun towards the turkey and hope he closed the distance.  Sure enough he came right to me.  One shot and done.

It took me a few screw ups but I finally learned if a bird cuts off a call really close, like 50-75 yards, not to dive for cover just raise the gun and stand still. You'll come way closer to killing him than diving for cover.

On another note I had one beam in through a time portal from the future once. Evidently sometime in the future turkeys evolve beyond humans and learn to time travel. He kicked my arse and stole my gun. So now it's my mission to exterminate all I can hoping most of all to kill all the smart ones. You know kinda like the terminator.

That's the best thing I've read all day!  :TooFunny:

Last year hunting Ozark ridge tops. Split up with my buddy after no gobbles at our first spot and drove a few ridges over. Hopped out of the truck, hit the call and one fired off 80 yards down the ridge. Text buddy that I had one gobble. I sent him the pic of the dead bird before he could text his response. About 4 minutes total.
