Title: Osage box call
Post by: Spitten and drummen on February 23, 2019, 02:32:39 PM
I love osage for a pot and even for strikers. Was wondering if anyone has or has had a osage box and how it sounds. Also for you makers out there , does osage make a good box?

It can make a good box, but also can be a nightmare to tune. I made a all osage for a guy once and it turned out alot better than I thought it would. It's not a call I'd want to make everyday that's for sure.

I would think it would make a better lid than box.

I like for a lid. I've used it quite a bit on boxes short and long.

There WAS as guy that made box calls all osage  and it sounded alright  to me  just not a strong  yulp at the end if the stroke. The down side of it all is every few months he would notify me to see if I was wanting to buy
Got so frustrated with his ways  , I erased all of his contacts info.

I had one years ago made by Chris Taylor.  It was a dawn and glued call and it actually sounded pretty good.  It was a rather loud box but easy to tone down.

After cutting a few osage boxes you realize why limba, butternut, poplar etc. are so widely used. When done right, it can be a great box.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190224/0eff405c84bfcdbe27a51f6dae0007d8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190224/76134822da3a869cab26f52c7bb5ffee.jpg)

I love osage, as it makes a great longbow, and awesome turkey call as well.

I make an all Osage short box called the Orange Crush. An excellent caller used by many of my friends.
Finding the straightest grain Osage is the challenge. Love the high pitched rasp these calls can produce. I often carry one. The Toms' love them too.

Anyone sitting on a pile of straight grained Osage for sale please let me know. Hard to come by around here.

Ernie Fetters made me a bloodwood over osage longbox. It's one of one...Love that call! Really appreciated that he picked me as the forever owner...

I have a "No Bull" bloodwood over osage long box I picked up second hand. It's my windy day cuttin call. It is also marked 1 of 1 and I understand why.

Yes it is, I'm banned from playing it indoors by both the wife and dog.
