Title: Real or Imitation Ivory?

So how do you guys tell if it's real ivory? I have a few that iv wondered. This is a Mero he did and its awesome but always wondered. Does anybody know?  :turkey2:

Kinda white to be natural, but you could just ask the fella who made it...

You can tell real ivory using a powerful loupe or a microscope.  There are distinctive crosshatch patterns.  These patterns can also dictate modern elephants from mammoth ivory.  There is a name for the pattern which I forget.  I used to know all this stuff when I dealt with artifacts.  I think a blacklight will tell you also but I don't remember the criteria.

Oh I know he wouldnt! I have 3 from him and they are all amazing. I used this as an example I got this in a trade a few yrs back I think.

I vaguely remember making that one.  I'm pretty sure it is the real deal.  If you were to give me the date on the inside of the barrel, I could narrow it down.  I have records of everything I've ever sold.

Real ivory has grain in it like wood does
