Title: 20 gauge model recommendations
Post by: robertsj2221 on March 14, 2023, 10:27:08 AM
I am looking at a new Turkey gun my original pick was a mossberg sa-20 Turkey. Is there any other models under $600 that a guy should check out. Pump or semi only

Bought the wife an SA 20. It's 4 for 4 shooting #5 double X. She hasn't even shot it. :)

I don't think we will ever get the right answer,if the same company makes them all...  Who Knows .. but some are better than others .. IMO

I have the tristar viper g2 turkey and I absolutely love it. I haven't had any problems out of it either.

Just patterned 2 20 gauge 870s (youth model w/ a 21 inch barrel & a full size with 26 inch barrel).  Both shot point of aim at 40 yards witha Carlson's Longbeard XR choke and Winchester Longbeard #5s, using just the bead sights.  Shot a Tristar Raptor 20 gauge that also patterned well with the same load and choke combinatio n as the above noted 870s.

Walmart has the Tristar Raptor youth 20- it's not drilled and tapped but it is $348 camo stock. 24" barrel.

I'm torn between the raptor and the sa20

I bought a Raptor 20ga at WallyWorld 2 years ago for my daughter. Put a Vortex Venom on it with a dovetail mount along with a Carlsons Turkey Choke. Really like the gun. I paid $299 for it to boot.

Any issues with the dovetail mount moving? Which mount did you use? The one I saw was a bit thicker, making the red dot a bit higher off receiver/bore.

The Mossberg and the TriStar are both Turkish guns. I think both made by Armson (sp.)
Stoeger is made by Benelli but I think in a different factory (maybe Turkey also).

I think that's right.  The Mossberg and Tristar are both gas operated while the Stoeger and Weatherby are both inertia driven.

I got an M3020 compact this year and am very pleased with it so far. Only run maybe 50-75 shells through it so far, but I like it. I do wish the barrel was a couple inches shorter if I'm being nit-picky.

Mossberg and TriStar seem to be pretty good guns.
Weatherby was having issues with their guns years back but that could well be straightened out.
Stoeger...I'd be leery of them. I know a lot of guys will be offended because that's "their" gun but I've read of so many problems with them.
Just my opinion...No offense to anyone.
