Wood, slate picks up the different tones off a wood surface, just like different strikers do on a glass surface. So if you use different wood soundboards under slate you'll get different sounds and pitches out of your calls,
I usually always use glass under slate. Willowridge is right though, you can get different tones by using different types of hardwood soundboards.
