I have a question for the pot turning fellows. Do you prefer to drill your sound holes before you turn the pot or afterwards? My concern with drilling them before turning is that I would risk getting some tear-out along the hole edges when I am turning and shaping the bottom of the call even after I have used a Forstner bit to drill the sound holes.
Almost the end of January! Can't wait for turkey season to roll around! :fud: :OGani:
I drill mine before turning the I.D. of the pot. I've had problems with tear out when drilling AFTER turning the ID of the pot.
I drill before turning with forstner bit i go slow and kind heat the hole a bit ,,, light cuts sharp tools ,,, i also keep these cones on hand in case i do get bit tear out and they come in handy just clean holes up they can be shaped your size hole https://www.harborfreight.com/cartridge-and-spiral-abrasive-10-pc-62395.html
Drill mine before to correct depth, use carbide lathe tools to cut inside of pot.

Drill before, than make sure you're using a sharp tool to turn the pot. I use a HSS skew to finish turn the bottom of my pots and that greatly reduces the tear out for me.
Thanks for the input guys. I appreciate it.
