Title: Desert Ironwood Trumpet Build
Post by: gergg on November 03, 2018, 03:35:59 PM
Building this Desert Ironwood trumpet(G2 model) for an OG member, posting some "in progress" pics here for him. This is the first time I have used Ironwood, sure works great for trumpets(looks & sound). There is no finish on the trumpet at this point, nor is the mouthpiece/ferrule glued in. I will post some pics after the finish is on and dry.

Very sharp looking trumpet, it looks like it already has a nice hand rubbed wax satin finish on it

Appreciate that.... this Ironwood blank was a beautiful place to start, I do spend a lot of time prepping them for finish.

Thanks Sir-diealot....I figure if I am going to spend the time and effort on building trumpets might as well use as nice a piece of wood that I can find. Some species of wood are just naturally more bland(and that is fine too), but the ones that offer some character, I try my best to hunt those down(if cost is reasonable). I have accumulated a decent stock of cool looking wood, fortunate in that regard. Another variable, never really know what is hiding inside the blank, can look beautiful on the outside and blah on the inside, so there is that too.

Here is a picture with a coat of finish on it, sure do love Desert Ironwood as it looks and sounds great. This call will be shipped to its new home tomorrow, going to miss it.

That looks outstanding! The finish just makes it pop a little more. You will probably have lots of calls go through your hands that you will miss. I'm sure every call maker has some that they wish they could keep. Great job on the call and you can always build another one Greg. :funnyturkey:

I have been able to play so many different woods already, building these is a blast. I am going to turn another Desert Ironwood call for myself soon. I have a bunch of other wood species I want to try too, in due time....lol

I received this call Friday and man it didn't disappoint. Beautiful call and sounds great. It's easy to play also. This trumpet is just as good as any of my other trumpets. If you are wondering about them don't worry you will be very happy with them it's a great call at a bargain price. Thanks Greg

No problem it is a very nice trumpet. I have hunted it twice now. I had one answer me at a distance but never came in. I know it's not the calls fault at all and it was good enough to make the bird respond. I am just not a very good fall turkey hunter  ,but trying to get better. I know she will be a killer I just haven't been in the right spot.
