Title: Gizzard Stones
Post by: spurred63 on July 01, 2022, 11:54:58 AM
Found out before this season that some hunters save the gizzard stones from the turkeys they've killed. Thought I would share this with those members that might not be aware of this. I saved mine from the the birds I took this year and put them in a small jar. Pretty Cool! Wish I would have thought about saving them over the years.

Some places it might take 40 birds to fill a quart jar and in some mountain terrain 15-20 birds could fill one.  I like to keep them individually until seasons end, then add them to larger jars based on subspecies. What the Merriam lacks in gobble he can make up in stones.

This is something I started doing this year and wished I'd been saving the whole time!  I keep mine in a glass wild Turkey whiskey bottle.

I use mine to surround my hot tub. Makes for a nice soft, good looking area around our 12'X12' hot tub. Lay brown fabric down before laying the stones. In case someone slips you don't see the bare spot quite as bad.

I used to store mine in Wild Turkey 101 barrels, if anyone wants some I have 10 or so barrels I may part with for a price for a gate price. You'll have to pick up here, I am not shipping.

Thats kind of TMI, but at least you don't have a small gizzard with gaul stones

Took some Gobblers in the " Black Dirt" area of New York  and in addition to the Gizzard Stones- the Crop was chock full of Onion Seeds. Onion is king in this area as a Crop.

They are old medicine bottles. That is a button from the war between the states in the frame.

I know MS double already replied, but those bottles are pushing 100 years old. Notice the rim of the bottle isn't threaded for a lid, those bottles were cork closure bottles. My dad is big into "bottle hunting". He has thousands of old bottles he's found in old junk yards and house places. It's neat to see old glass bottles of products that today are in plastic and aerosol containers.

I keep gizzard stones but never thought to repurpose dad's old glass bottles that way. Thanks for the idea MS double.

This is a bottle I found this turkey season, someone told me it was from early 1900, that's why I was asking about the bottles, now I need to kill some turkeys with some rocks in them.

The technical name is gastroliths.  (Latin gastro and lithic- stomach and stone)

Looking to do this. For most turkeys would a 20 ml jar work or should I get 30 ml ?

I posted this before but somebody might enjoy it. If you collect the stones from various turkeys in different areas and place them in a class tumbler it starts to look like one of those sand sculptures like back in the 70's or 80's

I've never saved the stones, but I have saved the liver and used it for catfish bait and have caught some nice catfish.

Empty Wild Turkey 101 bottles work great for holding/displaying them.
