Title: Best sling for turkey gun?
Post by: Bobby5 on April 09, 2020, 11:40:05 AM
I have a couple slings i use for deer rifles and tried them on my 835 and there way short i can barely get it over my back. I was wondering if you guys could recommend a good shotgun sling that is plenty long enough to use with my 835.
Thanks

I prefer butler creek slings over my claw slings but both are solid for a shotgun.I also have a few that I purchased from cabelas a few years back that are excellent, thick neoprene and comfortable.

Only sling I ever liked is the one that came with my 11-87 back in the 90's I have tried many including high dollar ones and none have been as comfortable as that one. I bought the Allen Company Gear Fit Pursuit, Hypa-Lite Rifle and Shotgun Hunting Sling (Turkey Sling) last year and though the comfort was alright I felt it made to much noise when I was practicing raising the shot in my living room so whenever I would get to where I was hunting I would remove the sling.

I bought that Allen turkey sling a few years back for my tc 12 ga single shot and on its first hunt it fell apart and my gun fell off my shoulder.I returned it.I wasn't going to chance it again on a brand new gun.I sold a lot of them through work and then one for myself.I didn't really promote them after I had the issues.

I use these on a few guns!

The Outdoor Connection Original Padded Super-Sling with Brute Swivels

Installs easily onto existing swivel bases
Rapid one-hand adjustment
Not affected by inclement weather
Locks into position for extra stability
Shape conforming & resilient pad molds to the shape of your shoulder
Moisture-proof bonding in pad
Mil-Spec type webbing
Includes BRUTE swivels
Integral thumb-loop for comfort and control when carrying firearm

It easily "loosens" for over the shoulder or cross body and then "shortens" back up tight to gun.

+1 This is a good one also.  I have a couple.  My favorite is their WIDE sling.  I bought it to distribute the weight of my Browning BPS 24" 10 ga. Stalker.  It does that and is also non slip like the claw.  I heard they went out of business recently.

I'm going to be blunt,I believe the Claw sling to be the most overrated sling I have ever purchased. I have three of them and I just do not find them better than any others, they are ok but they are nothing special to me.I guess I am hard to impress.

I totally agree. I have one and it's nothing special. I feel like it's a little too short, and I don't like the grippy part of it, which is the whole point of The Claw I guess. I like a sling to slip right off my shoulder without grabbing my clothes.

I only own claw slings. Threw every sling I owned away years ago an own 4 claws now. I typically do not swap slings between guns, I just leave them own there during the season and take them off after season. With all that said , I do not use a sling on a shotgun while turkey hunting. I will take a sling with me on out of state trips in case the desire to pack one in a very long ways is necessary, particularly more mountainous environment. But to this day ive never actually used one while turkey hunting. The gun stays in my hand....Deer season is a different story. But the claw sling is excellent.

I bought a Claw sling because of all the hype.  I couldn't stand it.  I started using Browning X-Cellerator slings in the mid 90s.  It's the best sling I've ever used.  It's the only sling I use on my rifles and shotguns.  I couldn't imagine there being anything better.

The Limbsaver Kodiak Air slings are the only slings I use on all my hunting guns. They are comfortable,  adjustable for grip, and have minimal cloth or webbing to carry moisture and freeze on late season waterfowl hunts. They also come with exceptional tooless swivels to attach to your gun

Man, if you can do it,  forget the sling and stay ready! Ive seen to many guns on shoulders when they should have been ready to shoot! To each their own though i know they ate awful nice especially when carrying gear.

My son just got me one of these Kodiak Air slings for Father's Day - it's a great sling.  I have been using Claw slings and like them, but I do appreciate the very quiet quick-release hinges and the lighter weight of the Kodiak Air - 3 ounces lighter than the Claw sling with the handle removed from the Kodiak Air, and the same weight as the Claw with the handle on.

If you've never used a Vero Vellini sling you don't just how good a sling can be.  Nylon covered neoprene w/ leather or nylon ends which is light weight, non-slip, durable, but the best feature is the expansion/flex which takes the weight out of you rifle or shotgun while walking.  Vellini also makes the most comfortable binocular neck strap on the market.  The only drawback are the somewhat tacky Vero Vellini tabs which I always remove and replace w/ brass rivets or brass Chicago threaded studs.  I've got a blaze orange sling for my deer rifles and green, brown and camo for shotguns.  Several years ago, I was given a Quake sling, a good sling,  with which I hunted on a couple of trips, but it was not as comfortable as my Vellini slings and I gave it to a friend.

Another vote for the Claw sling although i'm not a fan of the supplied swivels. I replaced mine with the metal uncle mikes locking ones. Also use the Boonie packer safari sling and love that one also. Nice and wide, they stay put on your shoulder and don't slip. Plus they can be used to sling gun in front of chest, which feature wouldn't be of much use turkey hunting, but is nice when duck hunting when standing in water. Keeps gun at ready while freeing up hands to use calls.

I have been running the limbsaver kodiak air for a few years. After seeing all the love the claw gets I wanted to try one. Got one at Wal Mart for 16 dollars and some change. I do like it and would recommend it but I still like the limbsaver better. The claw being thicker makes it feel bulky to me.

My brother bought he and I one of those rubber slings made by SLOGAN OUTDOORS. I never really used it until this duck season but it will be going on my Turkey gun. Holds extremely well, not very wide, and has a double strap that can be worn on both shoulders that would make it like a backpack but won't interfere with your Turkey vest in the back. I've been missing the boat by not usisng it more
