Title: Ohio
Post by: Holtbensley on March 02, 2019, 12:14:35 PM
Stepped outside right at sunrise to listen for some vocal birds on the roost no luck. Let the dogs out at 8-8:15 and had about 12-15 hens and 2 mature Toms in full strut in bean field behind house

I haven't been out to listen yet. Usually around March 1st is when I start going out in the mornings but with the single digit lows we have been having I haven't tried yet. I'll be out this weekend though with the temps on the rise!

Frigid here in central Ohio. Might have them tight lipped I always say about the 3rd week in March but who knows with this weather

Definitely been cold, hopefully it'll keep them flocked up longer than usual.

Been a few scattered birds gobbling some days down in south central Ohio. We should have a good crop of two year olds so I expect a lot of gobbling this spring

I have yet to hear a google! I have been out 3 times including this morning. I am going back out in the morning so hopefully I hear some. I know there are 4-6 different Toms on my property but they are still grouped together. Hopefully they will break apart and start getting fired up. I'll let you know what I hear tomorrow

I am in the southwest and have not been seeing birds on my trail cameras. By this time I am usually seeing them frequently. It has been so wet and cold for so long here that I am starting to wonder if spring got cancelled.

Again, not a gobble this A.M. I'm not too worried because I have seen birds around though. Hopefully they will crank up here soon.

Been listening 2-3x a week for 3 weeks now.  I've heard birds every time out, but seems numbers may be down some.  Places I normally hear 8-10 birds at a couple diff roosts, I'm heading 1-2 together and that's it.  I'm hoping it's just this cold weather.  But I'm thinking no.  This morning was perfect!  Seasonal temps and not a breath of wind.  Heard a couple in a place that I heard a boatload last year

Snow and cold wind probably has shut the birds down for awhile

Hit the goose call off the back porch tonight. Few of them sounded off saying goodnight to me just further down the creek rather than being right behind the house!

They should be gobbling good this weekend with the warmer weather. Calling for rain here on Sunday though.

Lots of rain forecast for the end of the week. I think if you've got your scouting in and know when they're spending their time you should do fairly well. But I agree they are not very vocal this year.

My buddy and I took his nephew out for youth last Saturday. Heard the first gobble at 5:40am, and it was non stop action until he killed his first Turkey at 10:15. All depends on where you are I guess.

I took the second week of season off hoping the gobblers are more responsive to calls then.

My scouting shows no reason to believe it will be anything short of excellent.  Have numerous birds patterned and the occurrence of single hens slipping off all over has increased exponentially around me over the past week.  I expect to find plenty of birds ready to play the game.

After today I'm thinking it's going to be pretty darn good Monday also seen a ton of solo hens and groups of hens by themselves today!

No gobbling tonight on roost which don't mean much because I never have any luck at night but hoping tomorrow morning is different best of luck!!

Good luck all Ohio hunters and prayers for safety. Not sure what I'm going to find, birds by the house have been silent for a few days. Going to the family farm, scouted it last Tuesday and heard several. That makes it hunting.....

Eerily quiet today. Only heard a few sound off and EARLY. The fellas made their way to hens pretty quick and couldn't find any others willing to play. Couldn't quite figure it out today.  :OGani: Trying later this week. Good luck everyone!

Heard several gobble good on roost this morn in south Ohio. Only a pair continued to gobble on ground. Didnt take much to bring them in.

Turks gobbled on their own on the roost last night. Set up as close as we could this morning but they flew down and went quiet, all the wind didn't help either.

Gobblers were going crazy on the roost then they hit the ground and nothing. Wind was brutal at 20 mph didn't know if gobblers could hear my calls.

My season has been hard. I've seen Toms every time I've been out but they are totally silent on the ground and have been with hens even late into the morning (11am). I'm hoping for a change of pace over the next few days.

Howd everyone end up doing this year?
Title: Re: Ohio
Post by: eggshell on June 10, 2019, 08:45:15 PM
I had a good season. I killed my two birds in Ohio on the second and third days. I called three others for my buddies. Gobbling was spotty, but picked up later in the season. I also killed one in Ky. and missed one in Ky. The second one in Ky got around me and I got busted He was actually too close (10 yards ) and I know I shot over him twisting around. He flew up in a tree just below me and sat there and putted. Finally he flew down the hill, so I'm pretty sure it was a clean miss.
