Title: Missing Eggs?
Post by: steelheadr on May 12, 2011, 04:01:43 PM
We camped out overnite two days ago.  We had our tent near the gate.  At noon when hunting hours ended we began breaking camp. We took all the gear out to the van and started taking down the tent. we just about finished when a hen 15 yds from the tent flew off.  I was sure there was a nest.  There was with 8 eggs in it.  We finishe and then we visited the landowner for an hour and a half.  When we left and had to open the gate we loked to see if she was back on the nest.  She wasn't there. I'm not sure if she was was still laying or setting yet.  WE checked the eggs and there was only 3 left in the nest.  There was no shells there from a predator. The middle of the day would be a safer time of the day from predators.  Question is would a hen move eggs to a new location and if so how?

steelheadr,

She didn't move the nest.  It was predated--the predator took the eggs.  Most probably a crow.
