Title: Best green slate
Post by: coyote1 on February 28, 2019, 11:30:01 PM
Who makes a good one?

I have a Halloran, it's the only one I have played.

Lon Trice makes a fine one in Bubinga and Dustin Jones cherry or walnut are great too. Brad Roberts cedar green slate is awesome but good luck finding one.

I have bought and sold several. I have kept one that my buddy is gonna use this season to see how he likes it. That is a Strut zone in a cherry pot (really good call). The other one  I liked but sold it was a Blackstone in a cherry pot ( fantastic call!) Most recommend the Roberts green slate which I would like to try but he's not making any currently.
Gonna run Hank's this weekend at the deer classic. They have 3 different species. After this weekend if I don't like any of those, I am gonna decide on a MAC or possibly re vist a Lonzo. I did hear a blue mahoe over glass on Preacherman's facebook page that sounded pretty good too. Footballer makes a good one as well

Update 3/5/19. Did not like the Hanks green slate sound. Fine pot, nice construction though. Keeping my eyes open for a MAC green over Aluminum or glass or Lonzo green slate in a bubinga pot.

Look no farther than mark cunningham aka footballer right here on og. He makes one of the finest I have heard in a sasafrass pot.

MAC Walnut green slate is smoking!

Brad Roberts Cedar is almost unmatched when it comes to green slate in my opinion. His other woods are good too if you can those.

But Lon Trice(Lonzo) makes a real mean one in Bullet Tree, Mark Cornelius (MAC) in Walnut, Dustin Jones(Blackstone) in Cherry. You can't go wrong with any of those.

I'd also like to say that Gary Anderson of Daybreak calls makes a great green slate

If you want a higher pitch front end, but overall more "mellow" than other green slates, I'd also recommend Gary's all the way.

I got this one a few weeks ago, I have ran green slates from Lonzo, Roberts, MAC ect. This Platz Walnut green slate is the most realistic of them all.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190301/e54bbf04ce15d8bcdb699fb658658aaf.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190301/ec4525cdd26517697514ee7b3b6883b3.jpg)

Thanks guys.I will check out footballer, Mac and Blackstone. I have never ran a pot from any of these guys.

I have heard a lot about the Roberts cedar and I'm sure the platz sounds great. Those 2 seem like very hard calls to get a hold of.

Try one of Buster`s calls green slate . You will not be disappointed with the quality sound and looks. They are very affordable and you wont have to wait forever to get one.

I'd say the best green slate is one you can actually buy and use this season.....

And at a reasonable price.

I really like the one I got from MAC Game Calls here on the site, very easy to play and seems to really grip the striker for a great sound.

Footballer makes a good one as well in a Sassafras pot that sounds very good if not better than the ones mentioned here.
I've got a Footballer and it is a mighty fine pot!! It will be in my vest this year.

I bought a Osage Green slate over glass at Unicoi in 2018 from Paul Durham. It's the best I've played or heard.

Sneed green slate and Matt McLain black locust
Title: Re: Best green slate
Post by: coyote1 on March 04, 2019, 10:21:30 PM
I ordered one from footballer, should have it in plenty of time to hunt.

I am going to check out Mac in the future, I have never ran one of his calls.

I didn't know Sneed made a green slate. I do have the Mclain blk locust striker and like it on a lot of calls.

I just picked up a Padauk green slate from Chad Remenaric (BigSlam51 here on OG) and it's amazing. He turned a beautiful Americana Rutland dymondwood striker to go with it and I'm blown away. It's outstanding and will 100% be in my vest opening morning.

Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you like your call and striker! I'd like to share why I haven't posted in a while. Something happened with my tapatalk app about a year ago and I lost all my messages, and couldn't log into OG for some reason, and it lasted for a couple months. I really like this forum because it's all turkey, and no BS so I plan on sticking around now and hopefully nothing else happens.

That's a beautiful pot and a sweet striker. Don't see Rutland dymondwood too much any more.

I don't doubt the strawser sounds really good, he is another maker I haven't tried.

What wood?

I have a smoking sassafras green slate pot he whipped up. I think it's got the best, most realistic, raspy back end I've ever heard in a pot call.

I ordered the sassafras. You are 1 of 3 people to comment on how realistic the back of the yelp is. It sounded really good in the sound file footballer sent me. After hearing that I figured I might as well order one.
