Was reading post on your best pot call. Several said they had a great call until it went dead. How does a call suddenly go dead ?

What he said. Most times they can be fixed.

I have one that has died.  Is that something I could fix myself?  It's a crystal surface.

callmakerman

Yes. Goop plus new glass or crystal and clamps should get you back in business. Glass or crystal can be had from brookside and goop at the hardware store. Clean the ledge good to except the fresh glue. You may if it just loosened up be able to push the crystal out clean it up and reuse.

Glue failure may be caused from the pot warping a few thousandths will cup the wood enuff to put stress between the glue bond wood pot  and calling surfaces

Also.  It is best to re turn the pot removing a few thousandths to correct the pot cupping.  If you don't it may occur again due to the constant stress that is present after the clamps/weights are removed.  Double turning a pot is an excellent method to relieve the movement of the wood after turning  it works 99%of the time.   And some woods are more prone to movement than others.

Thanks for this information, i didn't realize a pot call would do all of this ....luckily so far I've not had this problem with one of my pot calls ....

mmclain is right on,...most of the time it is wood movement,..especially in slate calls.

noisy box call that seems to sound like a flock of juvenile hens pecking their way through a wheat field

Thanks for the replys. I did order a call that came in with the sound board loose. Never thought about the wood twisting.

boxcaller

....yep,...I've seen the calls change even after several years.  a lot of factors to consider when dealing with wood.
