Title: Loudest Longbox
Post by: Happy hooker on January 22, 2018, 05:47:43 AM
On a trip I of course bring my favorite calls including a selection of pots, short boxes and Long boxes. But I also bring some that are weather conditions stuff more able to handle wet or humid or windy.

I'd like to have a High Wind screaming longbox "just" for those hurricane days don't care if it purrs or
kee kee's or is versatile, just an air raid siren.

I realize a lot depends on the stroke and pressure but I'm wondering if there's a longbox that's famous for its volume or what wood combo might produce the most volume and still be decent sounding.
Like to hear your experience.

I think a walnut box with cherry lid would perform better for loudness.

I make a 16 inch long box that will bust an ear drum, regardless of the wood combination.

As I presume you already know a long box will reach out and touch-em if needed, not that it should ever be run that way.  In general a harder denser wood for the lid (Bloodwood, Ipe, Mora, Snakewood) over a softer wood, mostly Butternut, will produce a louder call and a higher Kee-kee if desired, but definitely a louder yelp.

For shear volume, I'd go with a higher pitched/harder box. Mineral Poplar, and walnut are two that are normally higher pitched. Mahogany also makes a higher pitched one.

Roger Parks makes one of the loudest long boxes I have played and it will still tone down for softer talk. Great call that wont break the bank.

My favorite is bloodwood/mineral poplar. Will reach out and let 'em know you're there.

I got a battle ship heartbreaker. That's fairly loud but wouldn't say it's a screamer. By any means.

I have a bloodwood paddle over an osage orange long box that's the loudest box I've ever heard.
