Hey all, I just ordered tulipwood, osage orange, and cedar strikers for my pot calls. I ordered the cedar for my slate and the other two off things I've read here. Any of you have personal experience with the tulipwood or osage? What type of calls you run them on? What sounds they make best?
Thanks for the help
I think me, you, and 357mag all caught some pot fever this year!! I have a cedar striker, I like how it runs, I don't have Osage or tulipwood, but I just got a katalox, it makes most of my calls scream.
I've definitely caught the fever. I've been looking everyday here and on eBay to see if there's anything I want to pick up. I think I'm satisfied for this season. That doesn't mean I can't get more for off season practice though. :toothy9:
Ha! That's what I said... Then I bought two more calls. The best part is that I actually love them all, they sound amazing.
I'm absolutely in love with my slate I got. I think I want to get some kind of halloran and a ceramic pot. I'd like a spalted wood or a burl next.

I got them in today. The cedar is amazing on my slate. The others are very good too. Glad I got them.

Toler game calls.
Here's a link to another auction of his.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/172116059024
You can buy separates or a 3 pack. He has pot calls too. i did a search on here about his calls and didn't find much so I've been leary of buying one. I really like his rosewood ceramic, but I've been keeping an eye on the classifieds here to see if I can find a more known name for a ceramic pot.
Ok thanks I'll look into them

Definitely got the bug on the pot calls. I had one a month ago. 3 now. 1 striker a month ago 6 now and 3 on the way.
Definitely 100% get in touch with Savduck on this forum and at bare minimum try his Jatoba striker. Thing is down right nasty. I just sent him money today and told him to pick me out "3 shouldn't be without strikers" that he makes.
I know I'm getting a persimmon, blood wood, and then something else random. Whatever he decides. They are a little thinner than most strikers and have a slight flared tip. The top end is not overly large and they all have a nice finish. They are for work and look great. Because of the small size/weight I can run them fast with excited clucks and that Jatoba made my other calls scream.
I'll look into it. I got the bug bad. I've got 6 strikers, laminate, purpleheart, cherry, tulipwood, osage, and cedar. 2 pots, one slate and one glass. I've been looking hard to find a ceramic and then get an all-weather striker to go with it for wet mornings. I really want to get a few flared tip strikers to try out and see how i like them.
Are Savduck's strikers one piece? I've been looking into a jatoba after reading your comments about them. I saw the same strikers from Toler on eBay. I thought about trying 2 out as well, but I hesitated, please let me know how they run. I think I'd still like to get an ipe and tulipwood striker.
I'll try to upload a sound file today. Don't laugh because I'm not too great yet, but I'll upload what I have on glass and slate. Especially the tulipwood since it's what you're looking at that I have.
Savducks are one piece.
These are all on my slate. I will try to upload glass tomorrow. It was hard enough trying to get the kids to be quiet while I did these three videos. The first is osage, the second is tulip, and the third is the cedar. Again, don't laugh, I still need a lot of practice.

Sounds decent man! No worries not many folks can play perfectly
Thanks i appreciate it. Been practicing every day. Mouth call practice on my way to work each day too for when they get close. Less than a month now and I can't wait.

Hahaha I feel embarrassed posting this but here y'all go!
Sounds good to me. Can't get better without some constructive criticism or some atta boys from us.

Yeah I hear that. I need to learn the language more. It would help to have a sit down with someone local that knows their stuff.
I feel the same way. There's a guy at church that i know kills birds every year that I'm going to ask to give me a few calling pointers.
Also, I got another call....it's the last one for a while I swear! lol. I got a spring creek box call. Leopardwood over curly maple short box. Should be getting it in the next few days. I've been wanting to pick up a box call for a little while now and didn't want to settle for anything that wasn't custom. i saw the call posted in the classifieds and fell in love with the leopardwood top and had Mike send me a sound file and bought it about 5 minutes after hearing the file. Can't wait to get it in the mail.
You are gonna love your spring creek box call! I bought mine before last season and I love it! I called in around 9 or 10 birds from over 500 yards away with it just last season. I've only done that a handful of times in my whole turkey career before that.
I thought I'd post my call arsenal I'll be hunting with this year as well. The spring creek box on the top is the only one that isn't new for this season. Below that is my trough call I bought here on old gobbler from Scott's custom turkey calls and my spring creek scratch box. The pot calls are a Yingling copper pot, pecker wrecker glass, and a Lonnie Sneed hot hen slate. I'm getting ready to order some more Hook's mouth calls today and I will "probably" be done ordering calls till after season. I still have licenses and ammo to buy. But I cant wait to add more calls to this collection.

How's the trough call? How does it play? Never seen one

I was honestly just expecting it to be a cluck and purr type call but was blown away at how good it sounds. It's one of my favorite calls, plays easy and sounds amazing, especially with his purple heart striker. I highly recommend one

I'll post all my calls once I get my box call. Should be tuesday. Looks like your set up for anything with your calls John. I"m really looking forward to getting the box call for sure. i need to get a new owl hooter. Dropped mine on the concrete floor of the garage today and it shattered..
Still deciding on the jatoba or tulipwood strikers.
Here's my collection so far:

Damn son! What's your top 3 favorites?
I think 357 and I have some catching up to do! I like that copper that is dyed.
Out of the crystal calls, I believe the Crystal Mistress is my favorite...this week. I just like the sound. I will say that the Vision and Crystal Screamer both have their own unique sound and they all have things I like about them. I like Lonnie Sneeds slate call. So easy to play, it runs every type of call you can muster with ease. Glass is tough. I have glass/glass, glass/slate, glass/zebrawood...right now the MAC and Schaffer no name are my top two. I'm not sure which one is my favorite at the moment. By the time I try to narrow down strikers with calls, I talk myself in and out of a lot of different calls. All I know is, I better take a lot of people out hunting this year to give them all a try!!
Very nice looking collection Hunter1979

Just ordered a Spring Creek short box Jatoba over Maple. Hope I like the box calls.
Let me know how you like it. I've been working with mine the past few days and really liking it. Cutting on it is great. I need to work on yelps a little more and I can't get a purr out of it to save my life. Just need more practice.

I believe that you'll love it.
I just received one of Sinclair's $30 snakewood strikers. I can see why they sell out so quickly. I love it. I think it can easily replace most of my strikers. It plays easily on any surface. I'm thinking that, a carbon striker, and something soft like black locust might be all I go out with this season! I'm going to play around with it some more, but so far, so great!
That's awesome. Snakewood is going to be next on my list of strikers.
I feel like if I am spending $30+ on a striker, I need to get one with some fancy ivory or gold inlay lol. I am somewhat afraid to try it.
The one piece persimmon striker I got from Del Crow is awesome. I sold my Halloran persimmon after playing with it for a bit.
I know, but I figured a regular striker is usually around $15, so for $30 it better be twice as good. So, far, it is. It plays on aluminum, slate, glass, crystal. Maybe it's just the versatility I like right now, I don't know... I'll try to give a better report once I play with it some more.
I hear a lot of good things about them. I'd definitely like to try one out.
Got my Spring Creek Box in today.
Like it, pretty well built for a "standard hunting" box call. Sounds pretty damn good and easy to play as well.

Nice. I think you're gonna like it

Yeah I am already pretty hooked on it. Now that I have a "cheap" (only by cost if you ask me) call, I want to find something higher end. Thinking in the $100-$150 range. Another short box of very high quality that can do it all and look good would be awesome. No idea who's to look at though.
Yea I feel the same way. Cheap by cost, but not by construction or sound at all if you ask me as well. I'm thinking about an SS calls premium or long box next. Mineral polar/maple or limba/maple in a premium short box probably will be next. I hear a lot of good things about their calls as well.
Yeah I am thinking I like the looks of the Mahogany/Purpleheart or the Butternut/Purpleheart from SS calls.
I was actually leaning towards them since everyone is singing their praises on this forum and I like the fact they did the free call give away for the forum. That is bonus points for me.
I am a huge spring creek fan. Definitely check out SS custom calls. Heard nothing but great things about them. I am wanting to get one myself
