General Forum / Re: Crows even eat turkey eggs

There is an absolute link to crows and turkeys.  I paid extra attention to it this year and 9/10 times I had a bird gobbling crows would show up.  If I had hens walking around cameras crows would be on camera within a minute typically.  I think they know gobbling toms mean hens and hens lead them to nest.

General Forum / Where are they?

I'm from WNY and had a good season filling both my tags by the first week of the season. However, the birds here reacted strangely. Where normally you would hear birds gobble from roosting like clockwork, silence... I'm not the only one with this observation. Many hunting buds report the same observation—another observation: Birds sighted on trail cams right up to the season start, disappearing completely. I also traveled to upper Michigan and harvested a nice bird there, but had a hard time finding them. But my buds there also had the same issues with birds disappearing. They said during the fall deer season, they saw flocks of good populations, more than they ever saw in the past. They said the hatch was great and winter was very light so the Spring hunt would be ideally great. But their birds also disappeared. Where normally you would see local flocks in town feeding in backyard feeders, gone! One of the best turkey guides in Michigan there lived 5 minutes from our camp and we stopped to "pick" his mind, he was complex himself. No one had an answer...What say you?

I read something about them getting 1.7 eggs per crow.  Now that is not coon numbers but it's significant considering how many crows.

For what it's worth I've witnessed them and ravens eating turkey eggs.

20 Gauge Turkey Guns / Re: Affinity3 Turkey Bolt Issu...

Good advice provided already, especially on running very little lubricants.

They really should include a warning with all guns in the package on blaze orange paper that tells owners to completely breakdown and thoroughly clean the gun before use (not saying you did not, just adding this for anyone reading later on with less experience).  My Stoeger and Franchi were filthy from the factory and I surgically cleaned them before ever cycling the actions. Zero problem with them.

It is also important to shoot higher powered shells for a bit before going to lower power shells (according to many experts), but I only use mine for turkeys and they have only seen turkey loads the whole time. The only shell that would not cycle in the Stoeger was the Federal TSS due to the shell length, but I don't shoot those anyway. Have fun breaking it in and hope it goes well for you!

I've almost bought it a few times in case something ever happens to the one I have already lol. Doesn't leave the vest

Turkey Guns / Re: As 12ga goes, anything out...

I'm another 870 fan boy. I've got six of them in various set ups right now. They all shoot lights out and are as reliable as a bag of hammers.

I have not held or shot any of the post bankruptcy ones but have heard good things as above. He could either go that route or find an older used one and tart it up the way he likes.

As for the Nova I've never shot one but have held/shouldered a couple and they just don't blow my skirt up. I don't care for the looks (personal opinion that is totally subjective) and they never felt good in my hands and didn't come to my shoulder right.

Whatever he winds up with hopefully it makes him happy and gets him hunting. :happy0064:
