Title: Tc Encore Pro Turkey 12 Ga 24"
Post by: Hooks' n' Beards' on December 16, 2016, 11:40:47 AM
I just purchased this gun and pick it up Dec 28th.I am now figuring out what i want to put on it for accessories for hunting. Here is what i have decided on so far....
-Bushnell Trophy Xlt 1.75-4x32 Circle X Reticle  Realtree Ap
-The "Claw" sling-Realtree Ap

I plan on shooting "Hevi" shot through it #5 or #6.

I have been thinking of a different choke as well....GT,Pure Gold,Indian Creek,Star Dot....etc.I am a buy one choke and shell combo and be setup for good ....What are you guys using for chokes and shells in your Encore 12 Ga?

I have an Encore. Topped with a red dot from BAss Pro. Started with Indian Creek  .660 and Hevi13 2oz of 6's. Kicks like a mule but is deadly on turkeys and a dream to carry in the woods.

I own the original Tc Encore with .50 cal bp barrel and the shotgun bp barrel,i have shot a tom with the shotgun black powder barrel. It was just time for a new gun.I may just use the choke it comes with or a H.S Undertaker hd .675 i already have.Save the coin for an extra box or two of shells to try.I will be in around $1700 Canadian for setup before chokes and shells.

I located the scope and matching rings locally,i will pick them up sometime over the next 10 days.I would like to have gun together by mid January if work schedule allows me the time, still debating on a "different" choke to try....This will be my last Turkey gun purchase for the remainder of my life,i assume.

That used to be what I would tell Doris after every new gun "came home with me."

I frankly cant' tell you from personal experience what works best with that gun but I suspect that a JEBS .650 would be an excellent choice.

Many years ago, with the original Encore, I had many readers choose the Wright's #3 with a .650 exit diameter. Those were all word or mouth, from one shooter to another. Depending upon the time frame, they shot Winchester Xtended Range (ouch) or Hevi-13 shells and almost all of them chose #6 shot.

Whatever you choose, I wish you all the best with that great new gun.

Thanks,
Clark

I looked into Jebs,i am not sure i want to invest $150.00 +  Canadian into a choke right now,If i can find others for a bit less.I am already into this setup for a bit more then i originally wanted to spend,i do appreciate the info and was looking into the ssx, jellyhead and maybe a Carlson's for now.I believe it is a Carlson's it comes with.I am hoping to fire a few shells through it in the next month with the choke it comes with and the Undertaker and then go from there.
I am a lead shooter but will be shooting hevi shot through this gun.

Yes, I understand. It's always a good idea to shoot what you have before investing in anything else. I would recommend that you "deep clean" the bore of that new gun before shooting it. That way you'll get a good look at the bore and be able to find out if it likes to be squeaky clean, slightly fouled or fouled to pattern at its best.

Thanks,
Clark

Wife bought me one for Christmas last year and I was trying to figure what choke to start with Clark talked me into trying choke that came with barrel .  I did and lb 6's walks tall I am telling you. Hope you enjoy and it is a dream to carry and I used the adjustable sites that came on gun

I tried a cheap undertaker choke in my encore and the pattern is out of this world. I think it was like 20 bucks.

I will definitely be shooting some #6 longbeards and hevi through both chokes and if they legalize #7 shot,I will be shooting the max blend to try it as well.

I just got home from picking my new gun up,would any of you know which weaver base it takes?I thought it was the same as encore but it isnt.I have also decided to try a red dot, either a Bushnell trs or Truglo gobbler stalker, which have you guys used?

Trying to find the correct weaver base in these parts is a joke,no luck yet.I have it narrowed down to the Bushnell 1.75 Circle x,trs 25 or a Truglo gobblerstopper scope.I am very happy with the fit of the gun,but i do want to add optics to it.

I have a good many years experience with the Truglo "dot" type scopes, including the Gobble-Stopper. All are good products that work as advertised and they have an excellent warranty.
I am not familiar with the Bushnell sight that you mention but I suspect that it's also a good product. I've had many other Bushnell products over the years and they've worked quite well.
Most if not all "dot" type sights today are much better than any were just a few years ago. They are less prone to damage and battery life if much, much longer.
I'm very impressed by the Truglo TRU•TEC™ 20MM RED•DOT SIGHT. It's very small, has so many desirable features, including thousands of hours of battery life and "intelligent" off/on features. It is however quite a bit more expensive that the others.
Lastly, just like your shotgun, I'd look for something that you like with the features that are of real benefit to you and that's within the budget that you've established.

Thanks,
Clark

After a bit of banter today with my dad and brother,i am now seriously considering replacing the optics with "Ghost Ring" front optics.I have shot them for years on my Bps,love them and i wont be adding any weight to my new gun.I need to find out who makes them for the Tc Encore 12 ga barrel.I already have numerous turkey scopes and 2 reflex sights to tinker with if i want.I am not really a fan of reflex sights, just old school i guess.

I've been shooting a 12 gauge Encore for turkey for several years. I'm using a Pure Gold .670 choke with Hevi-Shot Magnum Blend. I have it topped with a Leupold NWTF turkey scope in 1-4. I couldn't be happier with its performance. It's been one turkey killing machine.

Personally I have had bad luck with bushnell optics. Love the circle x but have had three quickly fail on turkey guns. One on a 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge 870 and two on 20 gauge turkey guns. Scopes will not hold up to recoil. Like the idea of the trs 25 but am afraid to buy one. Shells are expensive and when you get an optic zeroed and then it fails you have to start over. Lots of money in ammo waisted. Wish I would have just spent the money on quality optics in the first place. Leopold with turkey plex or Nikon monarch turkey pro if you can find one is the way to go next time for me. everyone is different though. Have also used Williams fire sights in the past and they were good, I just need magnification.

Been using Bushnell scopes for ever,3.5",.50 cal etc no issues.I am a loyal Bushnell customer. My walls are plastered with animals i have shot with their scopes.I am not blinded by "Made in America"....But hey, that's me.

Ordered the weaver base locally, picked up a box of 3" LB XR #6 today to put through gun.Still debating on adding a scope, leaning towards a ghost ring setup if i can figure out if one is made for this gun.

I have put a scope on this gun and am shooting win lb #6 from the choke that came with the gun.I have only hunted with it 2 mornings so far, with so many choices to pick from. This gun is a great little addition,it does kick but it patterns well and shoulders great.I am taking it out tommorow for the day.

I didn't like the open sights mine came with years ago so I put a Nikon Turkey Pro on it. I also use a Rhino .660 for a choke shooting Htl 3/2/7s. Works great...Turkeys close in to 40yds no problem.

My 12 ga Encore is the model that preceded the "pro series" guns.  It wears a red dot sight on a TC sight base.  I killed a number of birds using the factory turkey choke with Winchester Double X shells stuffed with 2 oz of buffered, copper-plated #6 shot.  This year I switched over to a Carlson .660 choke and Winchester Longbeards with 1.75 oz of #6.  My only concern was getting a bird in too close.  I shot two PA gobblers at 30-32 yards with the new combo and was very satisfied with the results.  I had test patterned a couple of the old Double X shells with the new choke and would have been very satisfied to hunt with that combo, too.

I think i only hunted with this gun a few times last spring and that is it.I spent some time on it the last few weeks and put my trusty bushnell 1.75 circle plex scope on it and took it today to pattern and all i can say is...dynamite.I put a test shell through it and it was dead on.So i fired one Longbeard #6 3 inch at 30 yards and could not believe the pattern with the stock choke...I then stepped back to 40 yards and fired one and was amazed with the pattern. It was that easy and I didn't even need to test the other few types of ammo I had purchased to shoot. There is no doubt that this is a thumper when you pull the trigger.I have purchased 3 other new turkey guns since this but this will be my go to this spring...the 20 gauges can enjoy the safe.

I was never a real believer in the smaller gauges.I do really like big guns.I do wish they made this in a 10 gauge.I am now looking for a 10 gauge single shot.

I have been thinking of trying a reflex or red dot on this before season and putting the bushnell back on the bps 12 gauge.I have rad great things on the mueller, burris and vortex reflex sights.I am a little concerned on them holding up to the "thump"....It may see 5-8 shots a year going forward...unless something drastically changes.

A buddy has the T/C in a 12 GA as well. His patterned H-13 #6's &7's great from a Primos original Jellyhead .660 constriction. The 6's were 160's&the 7's crowded the high 180-190's in the 10" at a confirmed 40 yards.

I love both of mine. I have two 12.g. muzzloader barrels,a .50cal,and a 12g. Shotgun barrel...I really wish I would have bought a 20g.barrel back in the day. Now the camo doesn't match and I'm anal ..

I am going to call the place where I purchased this gun and see if he can order me the 20 gauge barrel to go with this setup.I will be toting this gun around the majority of my time in the turkey woods going forward.Do you guys know if the forends are the same for both barrels?I will ask him anyway but I couldn't find anywhere online or on tc website that tells me I need a different forend for the other shotgun barrel, just rifle or muzzleloading barrel.

The guy is checking to see if they are in stock from the distributor and going to call me back before i go to work at noon.I just want to have both barrels for it.This is my favorite gun to carry around and the pattern at 40 with longeards is amazing. It patterns as well as any gun I own.I can't wait to test the 20 gauge barrel with hevi shot mag blend and #6 of hevi13.

I just purchased the 20 gauge barrel and forend,It is in the hardwoods finish though not the realtree ap hd.I don't care and the turkeys will not care either. It will be in by early next week at the latest. Not cheap but I am happy with it,I will be shooting the fiber optic sights on this gun for this year.

I'm sure you'll be pleased with the 20g barrel. I have numerous top of the line turkey guns and 99% of the time grab my Encore. I thought a thumbhole stock would even make it nicer, but  didn't like the extra length and went back to the original stock. Also hated the original sights. I topped mine with a scope and will never look back!! Good luck....

I picked it up yesterday and switched it out.I like the idea of having both barrels setup with scopes,so I am thinking I want to try a simmons pro diamond. If I could find a Leupold nwtf somewhere that would be my dream purchase, always kicked myself for not buying the earth tone scope with turkey plex.

I about wrapped mine around a tree after missing 2 different big gobblers in one day with the open sights. Its hard to explain and maybe its just me,but the sight seemed to hide the turkey and if they were moving at all i would have to lower the barrel to see where the turkey was then raise the barrel back up.
My brother used it and i was watching him as he shot a Big gobbler and i seen him doing the same thing. He said the same thing the open sights sucked, but im sure some guys Love them, but not this one.
The 12g.muzzleloader barrel is fun to throw on once in awhile also. I've shot one Gobbler with mine. I thought about using mine this year, but might tinker with loads and scope it this summer and use it next spring. I have some Tss and H13 I might try to patterning.

I only like this sight on my turkey guns if i am using open sights,I have killed over 20 gobblers with this sight.I don't mind the stock sights on the encores but I am mounting a bushnell 1-4 with circle plex.I wrapped the scope today with camo wrap I had here.I will have to wait to mount scope when the base arrives late next week.I was not planning on patterning before then anyway.I use the peep site with this sight and love it.I have it mounted on my NWTF 12 ga 3.5" bps and my 870 rem 20 gauge.
